I'm new to this forum....
I'm in the process of buying a '98 GS 300 which is close to needing a 60,000 mile timing belt change...just wondering what dealers charge for doing this ... or is it a job i could undertake myself!
I paid a lot for the same job on my previous car - a '98 LS400 - but the job was done abroad as I did not live in England at the time.
Cheers

With the other things required on the 63,000 miles service you are looking at between £400 and £750 depending on what dealer you use.

my friend and I have just finished replacing the cambelt on his GS300 SPORT 99
model
the hardest part was undoing the bottom pulley bolt, the rest was quite easy.
we had been quoted by two dealers one said £297 the other said £320.
the belt itself is only £44.00.

The pulley bolt can be very tight.

Other than cracking the bottom pulley nut, the job is quite straightforward. I can't remember now what I paid for my belt but I think was about £20 or £30.

was it easy enough keeping the cams in position so as you don't knock them out of timing ?
also does the fan have to come off to do the job

What are the other things that need doing?
My Dad's is due the 120,000 service and he wonders what needs changing in addition to the cam belt and spark plugs because he'd like to have a go himself?
Also he said there are two spark plugs you can't get at (or easily) and was wondering how you do so?

Brake fluid should be changed every 2 year/20,000 miles, engine coolant should be changed every 2-3 years so it depends when those two things were last done.
Everything should be listing in the service book.
The intake and throttle body go across the top of the engine and this has to be removed to get to some of the plugs.

You aren't a gold member though so cannot get a discount.
