I don't know which models, other than the IS, have Automatic Headlights.
I don't use mine at all, never even tried them. It's just something that I prefer to be in control of myself. Maybe it's because they can so safety critical that I just don't trust that little sensor.
What do you think?

Wouldn't be without them. If I have to go around moving fingers I want my money back.

Think they're brilliant. Use them 100%
The ONLY time I might flick on lights myself is in early morning conditions where it's getting light, but I think sidelights would be safer (so others can surely see me). And even then, it makes the indicator stalk feel weird!!
I think they're great....thumbs up!!!

Yep, I use 'em! Like Tony says, sometimes it's better/safer to manually override 'em (dawn/dusk with low winter sun) - apart from that they're good!

They are on 100% of the time.
When I changed from the IS to the Civic Type-R I was always forgetting to put the lights on, so i had to get rid of it and get another Lexus!

Thanks guys!
Maybe I ought to give 'em a go!!
I think its because if the weather is anything but an almost perfect day, I'll use side lights. I assume the auto lights are off or on? Ie, no side lights?
Still, I'll give 'em a go tomorrow morning!

Jan 15 2004, 05:21 PM
Yep, off or on, but I take the stance that if its dark enough to put side lights on you should have your headlights on.

nope dont use em,, as they can turn themselves on when you dont expect them to.. like at a junction and the other person thinks your flashing them to go.

Great gadget....

i've voted yes as i do use them most of the time but they can be a little daft sometimes - like if you're stuck in traffic and you're in the shade then they come on, you pull away and off they go again once you've made it back to normal light. i often think peeps must wonder what im doing turning my lights on and off all the
way into manchester.
dont use it so much in the summer, i like to have sidelights on when its late but not that dark if ya get what i mean.

Nope, don't use them either. Going under bridges puts them on and you end up getting this look from drivers coming towards you like "what the .... are you flashing at"
Also, they appear to take ages to come on when going through tunnels.

Used them until they nearly caused me an accident.
Driving through lanes. Got to a dark bit, lights came on as I approached a junction and a car pulled across me thinking I had flashed them to go

Always use the auto light function, one of the better 'toys'. I've never had to manual switch on, if anything the sensor is a little over senstive.

Mine are on auto all the time. Never used this feature when I first bought the car, but now I drive with them on auto all the time.

Auto all the time, they are a little sensitive ( come on too early ) and I know thye can be adjusted - but they are so cool when you drive in a multi storey car park

I am with Fargo on this one. Used it when I first bought the car and stopped using it when they came on down a road with overhanging trees and someone thought I was flashing them and they pulled across in front of me.
Now I am in control.

Don't understand how they can be confused with a flash which is very momentary.
I don't tend to use mine though. There's no point.

I agree, they never 'flash'. Even when you go into a tunnel they take a while to switch back off when you come out of the other end so I don't see how it can be mistaken for a flash.
I have an underground car park at work and just love the way they switch on when I drive into it. I leave mine on auto all the time. Its always annoyed me that the dealer switches them off when its been serviced as I forget I have to switch them on.

With previous cars I was always forgetting to switch my lights on (got stopped by the police once

) so I leave them on auto to keep me out of trouble.
During the spring/autumn they do come on for a few seconds when I go under a certain wide bridge over the M4. Traffic is usually dashing across from the junction there to lane 3 at 50mph straight in front of me so it's a sort of auto flash for "oi wot you doin get outta ma way". Not that I would otherwise.

in that split second when you are in a hurry to get home and acros a junction say,, you see a cars lights go on, you may well think for a split second 'oh hes flashed me to go'

You'd have to be a pretty stupid driver to think that, the type that would probably just pull out without looking anyway, even without the lights coming on.

I tend not to use them.
As others have said they can come on when you are in the shade (and I go under a railway daily and they always come on in the 2 seconds it takes to get thru!)
Also when they come on they change the sat nav screen to the 'night time' view which is difficult to see until it is nearly totally dark.

I always use the auto setting, but I find myself turning the lights on, as you guys say, in early morning and evening hours. The system seems to take forever to respond, and does not seem sensitive enough to me... On top of that, California law requires you to have headlights on an hour before dusk to an hour after dawn, in addition to anytime fog or precipitation is present.

The auto setting is nice, but I find I end up switching them off manually when I reverse onto my driveway at night, to avoid blinding the neighbours through their living room window.

Why doesn't the IS have a "headlights on" indicator on the dash?!!
Does auto ever just put the sidelights on or is it strictly "all on" or "nothing on"?

hello gys;
I used to drive a Towncar with Auto lights, But when i got this Lexus es300 1992 I used to forget the lights on. So I got a drained Battery.
Can Anybody know if there supposed to be a warning beep like the one for the windows.
lest me know if it has an auto lights also

Apr 7 2005, 05:34 AM
I sort of use mine - they stay on auto and I keep the sensor covered so the lights are on if the ignition is on. Light help get you seen, even in daylight.
Auto lights won't neccessarily come on in fog - and that's a pet hate of mine, people think because it's bright that they don't need lights, or that side lights will make a difference.

I Always use them...had same thing on my BMW previously but think the BMW worked better, it switched on the headlamps when wipers (auto wipers also) were on. Lexus does not do this which I thing is a bit of an oversight as I think it is safer to have headlamps on when it is raining.
One excellent feature on teh Lexus is that you dont have to switch "off" then "on" to activate...this used to drive me nuts on the BMW, BMW said it was so the car did not wipe when blades frozen to the windscreen..like I said a pain. In the Lexus I switched ona dn now leave it alone.

I don't bother, simply because I was always told to have as little electrics on as possible when starting the car. Less stress on the battery or something like that.

Think your are taking that a bit toooo ofar, electronics these days use very little current...I work with semiconductor manufacturer who supplies microcontrollers to the automotive industry and the current consumptions will not affect something like starting.... maybe years ago but now now..

I always use auto lights. I realised how 'automatic' they had become recently after my mum had driven the car and switched the lights off - I was confused as to why I had no lights when I switched on, didn't occur to me to turn the switch myself!! On the whole, the lights switch on at appropriate times, and I've never had problems with people thinking I'm flashing them. Wouldn't be without them now (or without remote boot opening, one of my favourite things!)
