Hi all
Just noticed today that the air con seems to have packed up. I know it was working last week. Is there any history of air con problems on Mk1 GS300's?
Thanks

Have you thought it could just need re gassing

Yes but in theory it shouldn't just stop working. In most cases if it needs re-gassing there is likely to be a leak. I've spoken to a local mobile aircon guy and he will be popping round next monday to have a look.

Do you mean 'packed in' as in not blowing cold, or 'packed in' as in not blowing?
I found my air-con to be working fine 12mths ago (Jan) but come the summer when it was really needed, was at best only blowing cool.
Took it to a mate who does commercial air-con, but the odd car foreigner, who informed me that there is most probably a leak. There was a green fluid amidst the gas/air-con 'juice' which he reliably informs me is added to assist in finding leaks.
He gassed it up for me and it was great for about 3 mths or so, and slowly became less cold as time went on. He just advised me to fetch it back next summer and he would gas it back up for me (only charged £10 and a pint!).
This suits me, and is likely to be cheaper than a full air-con service/fix.
There are small windows in the 'H' and 'L' valves on the air-con circuit.
These should be clear (i.e. not green as previously mentioned), and should not have bubbles in (i.e. air)

Steve J

Still blowing but not cold or quickly demisting. I am hoping that as I tend to switch the A/C off, that the seals meay have simply dried out a bit and created the leak.

Could also be that the 'condensor' has packed in - I know mine has and will try and claim under warranty ... (3rd party warranty as mine is a 95 series 1 Sport)

When I had my Mk 1, I took it to Halfords (now part of the AA) & they charged me about £70 to fix the leak & re-gas it, talk about blizzard conditions, you could have made ice-cubes in there once they had finished.... well worth the dosh.

Just had my aircon checked and regassed,do not know if yours similar to my LS400 but my compressor would not run.
Apparently, if low on gas it will not trip in.I expected a leak but when the
guy came round and tested it there was still a bit of gas in it.
He spent about an hour evacuating the system and then regassed it.
£62quid.....it works now but summer is the test!!

Have noticed that there doesn't seem to be the change in engine revs when the A?C is switched on. Does anyone know if the compressors switches off it the gas drops? How can I tell if the compressor is working?
Thanks

Re a/c compressor..on my 94 LS the compressor would not
run when the system was short of gas.
If you can see the front of the compressor, you can see the front of the
pulley click in and run when a/c is working.
If it does not 'cycle' [ click in and out] there is a fault.
I put a dab of paint on the front so I could see it better.

Can any one point me in the direction of a picture where I might be able to spot it. Not sure what I'm looking for

Mobile chappy came round last night, pressure was down so he topped up the system and put in a dye. However as it was about -2c we couldn't the compressor to kick in. He said this was because as the temperature is so low there is no need for cooling.
Is this right.
On the good side he topped up mine and the wifes a/c said to get back to him when the weather got a bit warmer and left. So just had the systems topped up and so far not paid a penny.
Any technical guys know what temperature the compressor is likely to start working again?

The air conditioning will not work if the outside temp is lowered down to 0 c(32f).so will work above zero .

Re aircon, on my LS the aircon will not trip in at zero degrees i.e. freezing
point. Try yours again on a mild day......if it works you got a great deal!!!
