I read somewhere in one of the postings that dealers sometimes forget to initialise the sunroof at the PDI. So after 7 weeks of ownership I thought I better try mine out and guess what? It doesn't work.

Is this something I can sort out myself or will it mean a trip back to the dealer? My dealer is a £50 return trip on a car ferry away.

id get the dealer to do it...........and pay for the ferry

It wasn't that the sunroof didn't work, it was just that you had to keep the switch pressed. A previous post on this topic (search 'sunroof') will tell you how to inialise the sunroof yourself, assuming this is the only problem.
