Full Version: Reputation Counter
Lexus Owners Club > General Club Forums > Add a suggestion
Fargo
Ok on another forum, is300.net, each member has a Rep counter (where our warn level is).

What happens is that if a member gives good advice, then the other members can 'give' a Rep point.

I think its a good idea as it will encourage members to help out more (good advice, help etc) should raise the club up a notch with the amount of MORE helpful info..

So what say you guys.. please vote and give you reasons for or against..
Monster-Mat
i cannot give anymore honest good advice than i already do...............
Ahmet
but you've never got anything good to say ? lol ..... just kidding ... seems like a good idea to me ...... so long as people don't just start giving each other points for the sake of it ! tongue.gif

sory mate - not an "official" response.

just my personal opinion blush.gif
Fargo
ok, cool.
ColinBarber
I agree with Matt. There have been issues with the post counters in the past and the same could happen with this.
Bazza
i think it is a jolly good idea
i actually suggested this ages ago but to no avail

i think the idea of all trying to get points would encourage the people to give answers and try and help others
and when they post something bad or derogatory then the points would come off

with the post count, it was more of posting as much as possible, and generally created crap or useless posts

biggrin.gif
Fargo
thats my thinking bazza..

i think with any of it, its open to abuse, but if it is abused then the facilty is gone..

perhaps a trial period would be good.

id also like to know why its nto a good idea from the people that have voted No..
chib1177
i think its a good idea,

much better than how many posts you can rack up, it should lead to better quality posts not that they are good at present but you know what i mean.

trouble is my head is full of useless information so im gonna lose out bigtime wacko.gif
Fargo
lol i also cant believe that 233 views and only 12 votes.... thats funny.. if not indicative of one of the reasons WE as a club need to pull our socks up generally and take it up a notch.... seems to be just a bunch of people that will put back into the club whilst others may feel less enthused.. just an observation..
chib1177
oh dear your straight onto minus 1 point already and we havent even started yet excl.gif excl.gif

fair enough..
Stu
I think the idea has merits, but it will need to have very strict guidelines for use, as otherwise it will probably end up being abused, hence, obsolete.

Good call Mr Fargo!

Stu
Brettster
I like the Idea, But It will get abused if left upto the individual to monitor, and I doubt the mods have the time to watch over it. sad.gif

Off Topic, But where did Bazza get an IS body kit for a smart car from? hehehe
ifraz
I voted NO only because I think it will be abused. I don't think individuals voting for each other will be done in a fair way (strictly speaking). Mates voting for mates etc. Although I do like the overall idea I just think it wouldn't work.

Also if someone didn't like someone else then they may add a negative mark against them even if they didn't deserve it.

How will you know the whole process is done in a fair way? Also it may create competition amongt each other, which can be a good thing but alternatively it can be bad.

I would love to be proved wrong though so a trial period maybe in order.
Fargo
all valid points there ifraz,

maybe a rule (software) can be built into the system, ie:-

The person receiving the Rep can only get 1 point per Post, so if say i start a thread which is helpful to all and someone wants to give me a +Rep, then the software will only allow the 1 point from the first person to give me that point,, any additional points people try to give just will not work.

This same rule would apply to a good post in reply to a thread (as opposed to the above where i have started a thread)

Or each member can only give X amount of Rep points in a week.

Some TOC of the Repometer could be:-
You cannot ask for a Rep, it can only be given.
Only 1 +Rep per thread/post (if it warrents one)
A rep point can be given for Technical help, informative posts or bloody funny posts.
Colin is excluded as he IS the fountain of all knowledge, he already gets +10 lol.

Not quite sure if we should include Negative Rep points, after all what would they be given for ?..
Stu
Bad Jokes?!?! (Sorry, couldn't resist!) tongue.gif

No offence intended, and i am only kidding, honest!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif

Fidgits
In theory....

A great idea

In practice.....

As Matt says, just another p***ing contest
It wont be used by the people it should be (the newbies)
The system will be abused
Friends will vote for each other
Negative votes will be done out of spite
It will be impossible to police
I wont get any votes
Will it make any difference to the forum or how helpful people are
Matthew_McNally
not seen many offers to;

- code this up
- test it
- make sure it integrates with our existing forum
- make sure it integrates with things like the gallery, garage etc

In practice.....

As Matt says, just another p***ing contest
It wont be used by the people it should be (the newbies) unless it is a visible button
The system will be abused then it will be removed
Friends will vote for each other as people get to know each other then yes they become friends, thats a natural progression, and again biased Repping acounts as abuse
Negative votes will be done out of spite dont have the neg rep feature
It will be impossible to police perhaps only allow one person to dish out the rep based public say so.
I wont get any votes
Will it make any difference to the forum or how helpful people are i think it will encourage people to put more back into the club in exchange for a good rep

Mat i thought i was a module that could be added to these types of forum..

biggrin.gif

How bout this solution, make me the Rep police, and i will dish out the rep when people say a post deserves it.. that way abuse will not happen, i would think that codeing may be easier (dunno)
Fidgits
dont get me wrong Paul, i think its a nice idea...

but i just see it turning into a popularity contest rather than it actually doing what its supposed to..
Chris.S
Like a lot have said, its sounds a great idea but I think it would soon turn into a popularity thing after while
Fargo
then i think it should deffo fall on one person to make the call if a post deserves the rep or not.

Perhaps not call it Rep, but more ' this member has helped X people'

but, hey if the powers that be say nahh then so be it..
Fidgits
Nice idea Paul...

But who Polices the Police???
Fargo
same people that police the moderators of LOC.. US if the rep policeperson gets outahand then im sure they will be told and there license revoked..

I guess the point I was trying to make was, say a newbie joins and asks a question - say, about buying a second hand OEM Sat Nav and installing it..

I answer, 'I use a TomTom PDA solution, much cheaper etc.....'

Mat Answers 'You need the correct loom etc......'

The newbie then clicks my answer as being helpful, but not Mat's...

You, as the 'moderator' decide that wasn't justified, and choose to remove the 'point'...

My point is, if you have one person to decide, then surely it will come down to what that person decides justifies the point as useful... and even if you have several, the same problem could exist basically because whats useful for one person, is useless for another.... if ya know what i mean..
Fargo
i get ya ian..

the way i see it, people will not get rep for answering questions like you mentioned, rep will be given for OUTSTANDING answers or help..

lets take the above example,, if someone had answered you need the following part numbers xyz, beware of this beware of that..have a look here... look there, your find a diagram here etc.

Now to me that is LOADS more helpful than 'i use tom tom' or you need the correct loom..

If some one asked me about a carputer say,, i have a WEALTH of diagrams and howto (install screen in oem nav housing) and lots of sites that give you the parts needed say for the screen bezal fabrication etc.. and if i list the LOT then to me that more heldful that yeh it can be done..

In any case a good answer will not allways mean you get a point..

This argument of one person being in control.. i think your find that the same could be applied to a moderators decision to edit a post or the like..

Perhaps have a few rep police..
Fidgits
well, from what you say there, your putting the power soley in charge of the rep police and turning it to just being who knows the most.. rather than, who has been helpful..

And of course, your putting it to a bunch of persons who get to decide what is helpful and what isnt...

And you illustrated my point quite well, because how can you say that my mentioning the PDA nav, wouldnt actually solve the newbie's problem quicker and cheaper, and actually be better than the info you suggest wink.gif
Fargo
indeed ian,, help is subjective.... as is a moderators decision to say, censor a word, or close a thread.. none the less its an ok decision..

no system is without fault or without a way of abusing,, what the 'rep' points are all about is trying to encourage people to give as much as they take informationwise.

i myself can be guilty of seeing a post, knowing a solution but not being arsed to type it up... however if i wa gona gain a rep point then hey i might just be arsed...
