I visited this private garage near me and he said that lowering th car could damage the wishbones and cause other components to be affected. Is there any truth in this. I am only planing to change the springs and lower the car by 30mm. Can any one advice me on this matter.

Thanks
Anees
Lowering does change the suspension setup of your car. It will put abit more load on your shocks and the footprint of your car tyres will change since the car sits lower on the tyres - this can usually be resolved by having a geometry adjustment.

In some cases lowering can also cause your tyres to wear out quicker.

I have my car lowered 30mm on Eibach springs and just yesterday I checked my tyres and they looked great - no signs of uneven wear! This was after having a full geometry check a few months ago (approx 5K miles)
Mr Morse
Think that Lexus recommends going no lower than -30mm.

But, you can go as low as it'll handle - but the downside is that if you cure one problem you create another....

Things may read real complicated here but in reality its not...? the IS looks a "babe" -30mm and ok will need a geom, fact is it will need a geom anyway @ some point thats the nature of the car, follow your heart, go for it, we here at "team" LOC will ensure all stays well :D

It can cause problems ...........

Like mine did.

I had 4 people in the car ..... went over a (lowered man hole cover) it caused the anti roll bar drop pin (bolt) to brake, and bend the pin ........

New pin is £31 from Lexus ...........

Oh well .........

Quite a few of us have lowered the IS around -30mm and had no problems. :D

Some on here have lowered the car a lot more, and i dont think they've had any major problems if any.

Check out Mr Singh's car ;)

Lowering is an obsession, well it is for me...

my battery packed up, thats the only pic i took :duh:

My moto... if it don't rub it ain't low enough... :hehe:

Bazza
problems

its hard getting on ramps
a lot of garage type jacks wont fit under

advantages

midgits find it easier getting in

:D
Mr Singh
not getting jack under my car is a bonus, means no fool can rob my precious rims :D

Really... it makes the car stable, and gives you more confidence behind the wheel :)

Haha, don't you normally feel confident when the ride is higher?

Oh and lowering can have problems- especially if you live in a speedbump-ridden city like london with all manner of different speed restrictors to screw your car up :duh:

No sitting higher makes you feel like you own the road, and have the right to do hit and runs inc. those when your in traffic and parked in tesco's car parks....

But i totally emphathise with those who live in london or anywhere for that matter with rough roads... Milton Keynes is very forgiving in that respect so i take full advantage of it..

Lowering reduces bodyroll, has effect on braking too... its just a must do mod. Not felt springs on a IS200, i went straight for coilovers, ride quality was fine upto 50mm drop, smooth and not hard. Anything more you will be in for a harder ride...

I was down at head office this week with my boss - a 120Kg American gentleman. I had to politely ask him to get out of the car when we pulled into the site to avoid scraping on the speed bump

Even if you lower 30mm you WILL have trouble with some large speed bumps. You should be ok over most of them - I do have trouble when the car is fully loaded however.
lex2005
Ye but a sport is 15mm lower, so its only another 15mm. Can 3cm make that much difference?

I used to think that - but I have learnt that mm's make all the difference! :D

I'm not saying you are going to have trouble over normal bumps when its just you in the car. What I am saying is that when your carrying 4+ passengers then car will be even lower due to their weight and then you can run into trouble.

In my area I have some HUGH bumps (more like mountains) and even with just me in the car I do scrape over them! But these are seriously big! (I read that by Europeon Law speed bumps couldn't be any bigger then 75mm?? )

I know its "cool" to say your car is slammed down and it looks good - but you have to consider practicality. If your area is swarming with big speed bumps and your car is a family car that is usually carrying 4+ passengers then you are going to struggle abit. My dad annoys me sometimes when he is in the car because he keeps saying that I am going too slow over bumps and annoying the car behind! I'm thinking :shutit: .... I'm not going that slow. It can be funny when you have a 4x4 behind you howver

Ride is also harder on bad roads.

I hope I'm not putting you off but I spend alot of time in the inner suburb areas of Oldham which frankly have the most bumps and worst roads I have ever seen!! :yack: My view is influenced alot by the type of roads I am on daily. If I lived in an area with few bumps and nice roads then I would be saying got for it! :hehe:
Mr Singh
30mm isn't much at all...

there will be thousands of std. road cars that will sit lower than a is200 lowered 30mm.... so u should be be okay over 90% of speed bumps.. unless u live where Anees does...

i can still get over newport pagnell speed bumps, tendercam will know which i mean...

is200 not lowered looks weak imo, doesn't have the stance or presence of a lowered one..
Anees
Right.....I'm moving to Milton Keynes! :P
Ravstar
Haha, mine is a sport, and if I have a car full of comrads, I have major issues over speed bumps, even in first gear with careful positioning (you should see the queue of ****** off traffic behind me). This is why I have chosen not to have any friends and only a slim bird sitting on my side :D

I sympathise with you Mr Morse- when I had my old Civic, I was parking up and I had a friend of mine sitting in the back (who was a power lifter/fat *****) and as I approached the kerb, my car got trapped on it so he had to get out just so it wouldnt scrape all the way back off the kerb- the scary thing is my car wasn't even lowered
