RX-Men-8
Hi!

Since I will be receiving a Supercharger at JAE, what do you all reckon, can I safely fit it or should I not take the risk of not making it back in time to the ferry on Sunday?

At least I'll have to come prepared:
- Tarp for under the car as we'd probably stand in grass
- hydraulic jack (2-ton, got it)
- 2 axle stands (got them)
- Set of socket wrenches (got it)
- tool box with spanners/screwdrivers,pliers,allen keys etc. (got it, well assorted)
- Battery powered drill (got it)
- some kind of tent/cover in case of rain
- beer for the LOC helping hands (got it!)

Anything else to think of?

Reliability should be okay I think, any possible problems were with the valve spring/cable, I'm sure there'll be someone who knows how it should be adjusted.

Any thoughts? Could be an interesting workshop.

Cheers,

RX-Men-8
Ally
i reckon with all the s/c experts that will be there, that there wouldn't be a better time to do it. And you will have a good journey to look forward to to try it out. :driving:
Dave-Ellen
Go for it.............if you start early before people start drinking !

I'll be be bringing it with me !
Adie
Go for it mate. There'll be enough people there who know how to fit them.
Adie
Also the heat shield needs modifying so you should be able to have mine.

Is this correct
Colin P
yea, I say do it!

could make a good tutorial, plenty of peeps around to take piccies
Gord
You will need the anti-tamper bit to get into the ECU box, also can you swap heat covers with ad77 as you need to cut hole in yours :D
PhoneDrome
Me things he will do nothing. Just leave the car with the LOCers and have a beer :P

could bring a prolex-uk manifold along...............you'd fly home then !

I am sure with the number of people with a s/c there - it would be possible to fit itin a day.

How much do you need to get under the car though?

No way would I be getting under a car that was being propped up on grass

Rip up a few council slabs and put them under the jack and axle stands, should be OK. Alternative plan B is take a pick and spade and dig a trench to lie in :D

Has the car been lowered, if it was Mr Singh's you would need a very deep trench :)
Zee007
I was talking to Mat about this at the weekend Gerhard - I reckon we could all sort you out no problem!

Thanks guys, this sounds really encouraging and exciting! :D

Mine is LHD, don't know if that makes a difference. But if needed can we do a swap?

I'll get an anti-tamper torx bit, thanks for the info ;)

Yes, 30mm (TTE Springs) I'll think of extra support under the jack and stands (strong wood panel). Not digging my own grave :D.

Go for it mate ............ we can take photos, and then do an online guide, with pics !

That would be cool ..............

I have a pictured guide already....
RX-Men-8
Good, useful pointers are already provided! Things I didn't know like the draining the cooling system. And indeed, the front manifold heat shield seems to be in the way a little. I think the old (Black, without the lowered rev limiter) ECU will be no problem, I won't be able to run the cat so hot as the Germans on their Autobahn.

Keep 'em coming!

Thanks,

RX-Men-8
Zee007
Worst case scenario for the Manifold heat shields is to remove it entirely until you get home - then cut it yourself and refit them!
Gord
Why do we need to drain the cooling system
legendswraith
you do realise with this many people wanting to help out it will take 5x as long because there will be arguments over which way to do what and where to start
just remember the best time to start the job is not at 2 in the morning under a lamp full of beer :winky: :D

your supposed to remove the radiator to cut the spars that need removing........(thats by the book)

The tamper-proof torx bits kept me thinking today... First called around, no-one selling them near me. On the internet a couple of manufacturers were listed. Mac Tools, Snap-on, S-K Tools. Also found this:

Now I was wondering what size is needed, so I went to investigate tonight (click pics).

Hey, wait a minute - no anti-tamper torx? The whole box looked and felt like it had never been opened, and the bolts and screws were seized really tight. But just ordinary crosspoint screws. One less problem then. I wonder where the piggyback module would be connected. Seems like a soldering job?

Plugged everything back in, car purred like a charm like before. I guess now I've made an ECU reset. It's great working on these cars, really well put together :) .

If thats your ECU then we dont need the anti tamper bit :D the piggyback black box is solderd to the wires on your pic that says ecu plugs :D
TheDon
well i dont mind helping, i have removed completely and re fitted mine completely twice now.

Main thing to remember is plenty of thread lock compound, i have some great stuff that looks like a "pritt stick" clue dispenser, as its a wax like compound it doesnt drip on your face if you use too much and work with the bolt over your head!

i have a full tool kit with all the security torx screw heads etc plus 2 of every size sockets that i will bring with me.

anything i can do to help i will

Thanks guys! I've also received TTE fitting instructions (thanks Andi, very insightful). So I may just do some preparations like cutting away the fan casing supports to make room for the intercooler pipes, ans the plastic bits like engine covers and wheel well covers. It may save some time and it may mean that I don't have to prop up the car on axle stands at JAE.

Looking forward to it :)

Now that's a seriously good idea. Any prep you can do upfront will make the install easier on the day...
TheDon
also maybe drive the car up to JAE without the undertray on !! that would make life even easier.

I do have a set of the Blue mini car ramps that would easily fit into my boot. although you would need to take the front bumper off to get it up on them. but you need to take it off anyway to fit the intercooler!

Please do, as I'm not sure what kind of surface we'll be standing. Together with the stands and jack I''m pretty sure that is enough in any case.

-- Already removed the undertray, will fit it back home.
-- Already removed the necessary fan casing supports (plastic, I could almost snap them with my bare fingers, expected sheet metal  )
-- Temorarily removed the Prolex UK cooling panel (sorry Dave, it'll go back on at home)
-- Moved the cooling pipes in front of the radiator up and out of the way, with a nice set of custom fit brackets if I may say so.

Well, not much of a headstart, but it seems very doable at JAE. I'll have to think about soldering (ECU) with no mains outlet, I think there are these nifty gas-heated soldering irons.

Thanks,

RX-Men-8

in mainland europe the anti tamper screws are not fitted, only in UK i believe - the bits are normally only sold to security firms/recognised garages. I wont be crawling under any car if I come to JAE i can sit at the side and point tho!
