Full Version: Say Someone Degreased The Engine Bay...
Lexus Owners Club > Lexus Models > Lexus IS200 / Lexus IS300 Club

OK my engine bay was totally degreased before JAE using Gunk spray stuff and washed off.

Everything is cleaner but the car is now sqealing like mad when I'm reversing at full lock, something to do with the power steering.

What parts would need regreasing after a full degrease?

Thanks in advance!

try wd40 on the pullys and belts that should work. or your fanbelt might be slack.

did the gunk work ok though? most Lexus engines i have looked at are pretty clean anyway. some car engines just dont seem to get dirty.(audi 80 tdi)

DONT put oil on the belts...it damages there construction.

over time the belts will stop squeeling, basically the gunk has removed the surface natural lubricant of the rubber

thought you could put some lubes on the belts as long as they are not oil based ?

Put on some talcum powder (imperial leather smells nice) - will stop it immediately. :D

Put some aftershave on them, it does not stop the screaching but you save a fortune on air fresheners, if you leave your windows open.

Thanks fellas, I'll leave it for now then Mat, what about the throttle assembly as that was ****ted up and is now nice and clean, does that need anything putting on it?

As for the aftershave, not half, the car reeks of Gunk now when I first start it up, it's minging

I love the smell of hot Gunk, takes me back to my youth and I still use it on all the bikes. As my old man used to say "She needs a bit of Gunk behind her ears" :D
TheDon
get some belt "dressing" it makes the belts stop screeching as it re activates the surface and makes them more sticky
aido
I've got some belt stuff Chris, hadn't dare use it on any of these as they are all newish belts and I'd read somewhere once that the dressing eats away at the surface? Dunno if that's true, but might give it a go if it should be okay as the noise is doing my nut in
TheDon
i think all it does is eat at what ever has made it slip an re-tack the surface. i have used it a couple of times and have not heard my baby slip in months! and she used to get a lot of noise from the Power steering belt

Something id like doing under my engine bay. So nobody out there has had any problems after they have had theres steam cleaned? Ive always been a bit shy of this as I assume you can force water where it shouldnt go.

Personally I prefer to clean by hand. Autoglym Engine & Machine degreaser is good but expensive and doesn't last very long, a cheaper option is paraffin.

Whatever you use just work in a small area at a time, and work it in with a brush. Give it a minute or so to soak in and then rinse off with a weak jet of water.
I prefer to cover my belts with cling film or aluminium foil so they don't get wet, alternator too.
Once rinsed I use compressed air to blow excess water away so that it doesn't sit in pools anywhere and ingress into a place it shouldn't. When fully dry polish the metalwork, treat the rubber hoses and plastic parts, copper grease battery terminals and put a dab of WD40 on the throttle linkage, bonnet catch mechanism and hinges etc.

Brings it up like new everytime, and what's more you only have to do it a couple of times per year.
TheDon
definately use the autoglym engine and machine degreaser, it worked wonders on my engine bay.
