Yes you can. A number of different systems available depending what you want. You can get then to email you when they detect movement, and / or record.

What's the application and what quality of recording do you need? What are the light levels and do you need colour or monochrome?

If you need reasonable recording resolution (400 line or above) and frame/field rate (more than 1/sec) then web or networked CCTV systems will not be good enough.

A big thumbs up for Zoneminder.... those who know about myCCTV need to take a long look at the *free* thing that is Zoneminder... it rocks
