Full Version: Stopped For Illegal Window Tints!
Lexus Owners Club > General Club Forums > Motoring Legal Issues
Anees
Hi,

Police were parked on the side of the road today stopping loads of cars. Unfortunetly I got stopped and told my front windows tints are illegal. They used a light metre and found that the front windows allow 34.5% of the light in, when they should allow 75%! Got 14 days to take them off and pay a £30 fine. :shutit:

Don't really want to take them off, but my dad suggested something about a medical exemption to tinting rules that means they can stay on?

He is a named driver on the car and he has had trouble in the past with sensitive skin when under direct explosure to sunlight. He says that if a doctor signs a letter to say that he needs the tints on the car for medical reasons then I can get the fine removed and the probation on the car removed?? Wll just have to keep a copy of the letter in the car if I/him are stopped in the car in the future.

Any help appreciated (esp Ahmet :))

Is this an offical document available from the doctor or is it just a letter from the doctor?

Thanks,
Anees

PS Annoying thing is that I have to take the car to be inspected somewhere in Chadderton during office hours - no weekends. I don't have time to do this! Barely had time to even be on here recently!

Been googling and it does bring up a few mentions of a medical exemption? Sounds like I'm clutching at straws by the sounds of Bazza. :(

UV rays dont pass through windows so i would imagine sensitive skin of any kind wont cut it, unless he is a vampire. Getting a specialist dermatoligist to have a look at your dads skin might not be such a great investment.

You would be doing the world a favour if you managed to blag it.

Dad was telling me about someone he used to know. Apparently a friend of his used a reason similar to this a few years ago for his window tints. He had a history of skin problems and was refered to a dermatoligist for tests where they concluded that direct exposure to sunlight had a directed impact on his skin or something like that! He just carried a letter with him from his doctor incase he was ever stopped. This was a few years ago mind... things have probably tightened up now and my dad has lost contact with him.

Might be worth getting the doctor to refer him since he has on occasiona gone red and had swelling when the sun is shining on him. Suppose I can try can't it? Worse the doctor can say is no.

exactly, if it doesn't cost too much it would definitely be worth it. Hang on, i'll see if i can find Dr Nick Riviera's number. :whistling:

Only in America....
i got a note from the eye doc. it was a bit difficult because the first 20 i called wouldnt have any part of it. so i finally just made an appointment for an eye exam. while the doc was giving me the exam, i told him about my ticket. he told me my eyes were perfect and he just couldnt fathem writing a note for sensitive to light eyes. he said there has to be a abnormality going on. all of a sudden i remember this mole i have behind my left ear. i said.....ok, i got this mole hear that is so annoying when i wear sunglasses.....doc says....let me see that.....then the doc says....that would be annoying for sure. so... he wrote me a note, it says..."please allow josh to have tinted windows because he has a ear abnormality which makes wearing sunglasses difficult." i saw the judge today. he said....this is what the court asked for, and dissmissed the charge. he also told me to get the note updated once a year. i am now allowed to legally have tinted windows!!!!! i just have to keep the note in my car. also im going to make copies incase a cop tries to rip it up....just incase.
From google groups

Would you not consider fitting lighter tints on the front......Had a very close call one night with a motorbike at a junction because of very dark tints......... they were taken off the next day

Car has very light tints all round. They are the "light smoke" type, not the blacked out dark/limo tints. :) With the whole car being done, from a distance the overall effect is darker I think. You can easily see through the windows from outside however and I've never had any issues with visibility from the front tints; nor have I struggled to make eye contact with predestrians or other drivers.

It is one of those things, some people will say it's illegal so foolish you for doing it. But again on my old car I had dark smoke on all the back and light on the front...never been pulled for it.. my cuz has limo black on all of his windows drives with the front down most of time though, he's never been pulled either... it's the cop on the day I think.. unlucky

did u tint the windows yourself? Cuz if you didn't the tint company should of told you they where illeagal

Suprised at that. Thought UV would have passed through windows

Well, guess you learn something new everyday!

My Carina E had limo black tints for six years without a problem. Gave car to my sister, her fiance drives it, gets stopped. Front tints are peeled now. <_<

@Mike- I may be wrong but I am guessing that your car is not your daily driver, so you may have less chance of being pulled. :shifty:

Where is Office ScarFace?? He has not been online since yesterday.

Rang the place I got my tints done from and they have now started selling more ICE equipment and kept tints to a sideline since they hardly make any money from tints since awareness of the new backdated law came into effect.

Gave me a few tips on how to remove them however!! :crybaby:

I reckon you could get away with it - on a technicality, like "was the officer properly trained to use a light meter" or "when was the lightmeter calibrated"

Go call that $hit hot lawyer who gets the football players off the hook, think he lives up your way. But you'll have to sell the Lex to pay his fees!

Anees, if the policeman thought you was ugly he would have let you go on your way :D but he thought that you was a nice looking boy :D so thats why you got a ticket :D so now you have to go and get them taken off, so we can all see you

Always wondered what the fascination was with window tints
No offence to anyone here but when you see the the coont driving it you think to yourself, no wonder you have your windows blacked out because youre a facking gargoyle.
Shrek is a model material in comparrison to these mugs.

Unless its a 'gangster', 'maxpower attitude thing' i am missing.
I was actually a bit gutted when i realised the sport is200 came with a slight tint to the back and was gonna have them removed. They werent that bad though, still prefer them to be opague.

Probably put an intelligence mark on your car as 'known drug dealer' lol!! :D
They will have you at a later point.

I cant tell whether the MR2 tints are that dark or not. Seems ok though.
Mr Morse
The back and 1/4 lights & T-Bar are Limo dark (the darkest) and the door glass is the next one down - dark
