Full Version: Load Resistors - How To Fit
Lexus Owners Club > General Lexus Forums > Lexus Work Shop (Submit your Tip!)
Mr Morse
For those of you who are unsure how to fit a load resistor for LED bulb upgrades, here's how. This picture shows a load resistor wired across the rear indicator bulb of my MR2, but the principle is exactly the same for all bulbs....

- Using the Scotch Lok provided, clip one wire from the LR (doesn't matter which one) across the live (+ve)

- Using a pair of pliers, crimp the Scotch Lok closed

- Clip the other across the ground (-ve)

- That's it! biggrin.gif

Can I ask a (possibly stupid) question:

If you later decide to put normal (non-led) bulbs back in what would happen? a, b or c?:

a ) They would work fine with the load resistor still in place.
b ) They would not work, you would have to remove the load resistor.
c ) They would explode, killing everyone within a 100 metre radius.

Answer B biggrin.gif
eXOBeX
Answer D - indicators would flash slowly, increased chance of blowing the supply fuse, possible illumination of bulb failure indicator?

can someone post a picture of theres on a lexus so i cut the right wire

No need to go cutting wires....the Scotch Lok crimps over the wire so if you screw up you get plenty more tries!

Pics will be posted up!

I like the sound of "C" can you make them do that it would be cool. devil.gif

Useful to note that these resistors give of a small amount of heat and can mark plastic or paintwork, so need to see that they don't touch any of the wiring.
I have fitted mine with double sided sticky pads away from other wiring.
Mr Morse
Here's a simplied pictorial guide, probably a bit clearer than trying to photo the car install.

Pic 1 - the components

- Red Scotch Lok
- Load resistor
- the +ve (live) brake wire from the "car". One the IS this wire is coloured green/white

Pic 2 - Scotch Lok. Note how one of the channels is sealed at one end nearest the catch.

Pic 3 - which wires go where.

- The wire from the load resistor (doesn't matter which) goes in the sealed end of the Lok. The wire from the car runs thru the clear channel.

Pic 4 - crimp the metal pin closed with pliers

Pic 5 - snap closed the plastic case.

Almost finished - now repeat for the earth wire and the other LR wire.
lexus_IS_200
sorry not very good at stuff like this so one wire to green and white and which one does the other wire go to you say earth but what colour

found it (white/black (earth) wire)
Mr Morse
Here's pictures of the completed installation using load resistors wired across

- Green/white - white/black (Brakes)

- Green - white/black (Sidelights)

The resistiors have been secured in place by sticky velro tabs so that the heat won't affect the plastic.

Dead easy job, 10mins start to finish. If anyone is still unsure I'll be at JAE to help out.

Mike.. How much heat do these resistors actually give off? Will they be ok with some insulation tape around them?

mate i've just got back from an hour journey with the lights on and those LR's are hot!!

dunno if i'd put tape round em sleepy.gif
Mr Morse
Do what we did here....

Sticky velcro pads, they'll keep the LR's off the plastic

they need to dissapate the heat
uncover them and put them where they wont touch anything
you dont want them catching alight !! unsure.gif

They can get quite hot! ohmy.gif Caution.

Do it like in the picture! Get some of the sticky velcro pads, clean the plastic where you are going to place the LR and Bob's your uncle. I've had LR's to cover my rear LED indicators for over a year now with no problem.

Piccy happens to my car above biggrin.gif if you need any stcky velcro pads PM me as I have loads.

do you need load resistors for all led upgrade bulbs??

Only for the bigger bulbs that draw more current:

Front indicators
Rear indicators
Rear brakes/sidelights

Do you have any more Load R's as i wiould like two more for my side lights please.
Mr Morse
Sorry I don't have any left as I ordered enough only for the brake light connection. If peeps would like to confirm who wants what then I'll go ahead and get some more in, but to date only a few people have responded.

Many thanks
