After haing been advised not to go to Twickenham, I have plumped for Croydon.

Car is going in on Thursday for a cambelt change. Got a courtesy car as well, so quite looking forward to that!

Will let you know the outcome.....
winnie
I can tell you the outcome:...money will flow from your wallet faster than a bat out of a cave at midnight

Labour rates went up this year at all Jemca sites,a cambelt change with tensioner and w/pump (are you having this done as well ) will cost you approx £600. ohmy.gif

Mine has gone to an independant garage in my area today (not far from croydon) its a days work and i will let you know the price i paid a little later so we can compare biggrin.gif ...o.k i dont get a courtesy car but hey i took the day off work to watch day time T.V w00t.gif

Mines well under the mileage for the change (100k) but the 6 year is up so it has to be done.
winnie
Forgot to ask why was you advised not to go to Twickers?

I'll post up a ful list of all the items involved in the final bill.

Im afraid you do as its what comes first mileage or age, good job i did as the belt was showing wear on the edges biggrin.gif

Here we go:

Timing belt 25.57
water pump 103.89
idler pulley 47.82
tensioner 47.82
A/freeze 5.60

Labour 126.50
Parts 230.70
Sub total 357.20
dreaded VAT 62.51

Total 419.71

Much better than paying £658 from the dealers.

Slight change of plan, am off to Lexus Reading now, due to not having a courtesy car for me on the day I needed to book it in. Also Reading is a lot cheaper! £318 and then subtract the 10% LOC discount on top biggrin.gif
And I get a courtesy car biggrin.gif

My car is on 96k currently, so is due a change smile.gif

Whats with the water pump then? Is that a known item to fail? Have there been reported cases? (Because it certainly doesn't ring any bells with me blink.gif )

Shoddy treatment by the service department.
winnie
Just a precaution really though Lexus Croydon did advise there was a slight weep on it when it was in for a service.....best be safe than sorry biggrin.gif

Theres a very small hole at the back of the pump between the fins it was leaking from there.

Not the first time this subject has come up....anyway.....

I called Lexus Reading and Bracknell, and was told 10 YRS or 100,000 Miles by both.

Anyone else fancy calling local dealerships?

Would be good to get a difinitive answer!
winnie
I can only report on what i have been told by different dealers and what i saw today,my belt was deffo worn on the edges and a small nick at one point right on the edge and my mechanic said i was right in booking it in when i did as i trust him as hes done every car we've owned in the family so its not a case of "well he would say that" so its done now and i am more than happy as i've got trouble free motoring for the next 6 years biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Why run the risk?
Bobski
not run the risk, as i wouldnt wait myself till 100,000.

But if there are owners on here with less than 60k on a 6yr old car, then they might feel they should run out and get a cam belt changed when in reality they shouldnt worry just yet.

BTW what mileage had your car done?
winnie

Look in your service manual.

10 years / 100000 miles.

It's there in black and white smile.gif

Why have yours done...you've got another 4k to do yet then?

That doesn't mean a thing, mine is a very low mileage car that does short journeys and every belt does decay over time and i wont trust the high mileage that Lexus say it should be changed, in my case i was right to change it.

Read above post....mine was worn and had a nick in it, i was happy to have it done at that mileage regardless.
Its 6yrs old and out of warranty if i left it and it broke would they fix it for free?.....i doubt it very much and the bill would be a lot larger than it was.

Because I have time off work at the moment to sort it out, which I won't do in 4k time smile.gif

I wasn't having a go at the fact you decided to change it earlier than stated in the service manual, that can never be a bad thing apart from your wallet.

I was simply stating that Lexus say 10 years / 100k, not 6 years / 100k smile.gif
winnie
Did you get it done Nick and how was the process, time and cost as i know you went to Reading.

It's booked in for this Tuesday smile.gif
Rob
unless it has changed recently it was 6yrs/100K
winnie
There seems to be conflict on this subject, i was told its 6yrs or 100k whichever comes first by 2 different dealers and others have been told its deffo 10 yrs ohmy.gif which seems a lot of miles on the belt for my likeing and why i chose to have it done earlier than most, i wasnt comfortable taking it to the 100k and it turned out to be a wise move on my part as the belt had a small nick on the edge.

@ Nick....i know what it says in the book tomato.gif
SHAHZ
Yeap its defo 6yrs/100k whichever comes first wink.gif
Bobski
laugh.gif

DEFO.............LMFAO............

Not even the dealers appear to know!

Plugs are 60k.
Service intervals are every 10k/1yr whatever 1st.
So 100k would = 10yrs.

I havnt read anywhere that belts should be changed at 6yrs.
(those who are suggesting 6yrs...where did you find this out?......)

I did read that belts will be checked at reg intervals.

But regardless.......its up to individuals to decide what yr/milage to change.

I can only guess Lexus have updated the owners manuals in recent years to reflect the new change?

Maybe us with older cars have stronger belts biggrin.gif
ColinBarber
I believe the interval is 100k miles. Is a timelimit specified in the service manual? I don't think it is on all of them.

I would advise the belt is inspected every 10k miles after 60k as belts have worn before 100k. I believe something else wears that then causes the belt to wear. The belt itself is easily good for 100k miles.

Yes Colin, mine is 03 plate and says 6yrs or 100k biggrin.gif

Mine has 35k on it now, and its had 2 belts to date.

I think the older vehicles don't have a date or it is 10years. Dealers may well have had their schedules changes by Lexus GB if early belt wear has been seen on a number of vehicles.

Gord, you've had yours replaced every 17k? cry.gif

I'd be demanding money back from Lexus for that...
