Pip
I also have the engine mangement light on with the TRC light flashing..

Car starts up but then just dithers away.
Is this the classic piggy back ecu problem?

What shall i do first?
Pip
Car is now fine WTF??
ProLex-UK
sounds like the piggy back ecu prob....have you checked to see all is OK with the connections ?
lee_iceman
Yeah, check the ECU connections then check the throttle bypass cable.
Pip
Everything a-ok now. Throttle bypass cable is cool too (as far as i know).
How do i know this aint gonna be and intermittent fault now especially if i out somewhere??
Luckly this happened whilst at home.
Bazza
more likely to be a case of flooding
the engine i mean !!!

starts, splutters then stalls
leave for a while it should then start
Pip
Engine management and TRC shouldnt flash though or should they if that was the case, Bazza?

it happened to me once, and i mean only once !!
exact same symptons
has never happened again

and to be honest i cant remember wether the lights came on or not blush.gif
Pip
Cheers Baz.
Leaves me with 2 choices change the piggy back ecu or keep an eye on things as it maybe just like what has happened with yours. Hopefully so.
tdiplc
If it is the TTE sub ecu Pip, you are better off replacing it with the HKS equivalent which is much cheaper and better quality (sometimes it is possible to get a free replacement from TTE but they aren't great quality TBH)
Pip
Well the problem hasnt occured again so it seems its just like Bazza said (fingers crossed).
GALLA_4
Happened me at JAE this year!
Relace the piggy back ECU mate.
What you typed above is exctly what happened me.

Owen
Rsarin
i have a spare one if you want pip
Pip
Cheers Raj but i already have one just in case this was to happen.
Owen: Did it happen again or just the once?
As Bazza has said it only happened once to him. I havent had it happen again yet (fingers crossed).

It happened again a few weeks later. I reckon it was something to do with the chip inside the protective block breaking down and failing due to heat. On both occassions it was a hot day and the bonnet was up. Rang TTE and they told me that the chip inside the block can become compromised overtime due to heat. Since I've swapped out the Piggy back ECU I've had no issues!

Owen
Pip
Well its done it again twice so looks like a black ecu swap next week.

Lee set his up by himself, by just driving it, you could ask lee what his is set to.

If you need TTE wiring diagram ? in have one.

Yes Barrie. They are £85 plus vat and are in stock (with wiring info).

The adjustment does affect the a/f ratio so be careful what you do with it.

Rob
hi Barry - I thought u had the newer ECU fitted not the black ECU so couldnt help u. Suggest contacting TTE for a replacement and see if that solves the problem.

i presume i have the black box, it was the original one as fitted at TDI when it was first installed, never had a problem with it
well not untill recently unsure.gif

Rob
will be the black one as the silver one is about €500 extra.

Moffet
Does this HKS one give any advantage if you're not having trouble with the standard black TTE one?
