I don't know about old reg's, but Manx (Isle of Man) registered cars can use the old style black and silver plates so thats prob why you've seen newer cars with them plates.

Think legally you're screwed mate, as far as I'm aware they're only legal on very old cars, over a certain number of years old, and the IS definitely doesn't fall into that category!

Yeah just Googled it and your car has to have been registered before 1 Jan 1973 to be able to legally use these.

shame as they look good.

used to have a black astra and had a black n silver plate made up for that. when it went for mot they wouldnt pass it until i changed it back to the yellow one. being the gov test centre they also made a note of it and said if they saw it around with the black one on they would penalise- bastards! they do look a hell of alot better than the crappy yellow ones, specially on dark cars. rules is rules though. hope this helps

I believe the vehicle must be Pre 1973 to have black and white plates.

Also (i think) pre 73 for free tax....and multi tone air horns :) :hehe:

Tht's my inderstanding too, I've got the pressed aluminium plates (ally letters and numbers with black painted background) on my tax exempt 1971 MGB V8 Roadster. 31 December 1972 was the cut off point.

have had black and silver plates on for about 14 months now and only been pulled over once, admitted that i put them on and ended up chatting to him for a while.

Needless to say i didnt get any fines or anything like that, so its all dependant on the officer. The plates were all of legal size and legal font and were clearly readable.

Had to assure him of my intentions to replace them ASAP though with white and yellow backed plates... still keep meaning to do that!

I had these for mine for about 2months and Got a 30quid fine for it!

i made a rear one for mine last weekend. had it on for the day and at night you couldnt see it properly. it didnt illuminate right and could barely see the letters. il think il stick with the yellow and white ones.
