Roy,
I have the lexus manual for the GS, and it says:- (DTC Diagnostic Trouble Code)
"If the DTC No 89 is indicated on the check engine warning light read the DTC for ETCS, from ECT SNOW indicator (ExceptG.C.C)/ ETCS indicator (only for G.C.C) to get detail of the DTC No 89. If use the hand-held tester, the detail DTC for ETCS are displayed by the hand-held tester."
It talks about ETCS trouble code 21, however looking at it again this morning I can see that 89 and 21 mean the same thing (damm).
I would guess at either a short or open circuit in the wiring to the ECU or the ECU itself, Can you not borrow one from another GS to see what happens?

I had a similiar problem and after replacing the "Throttle Position Sensor", it hasn't reoccurred in the past year.

This looks like a good place for this.
We have a 1996 Lexus GS 300. Today the Traction control warning light, and the ABS warning light both came on. The car started running rough.
This is the first problem ever, with this car.
Please advise.

That may well be the throttle position sensor. The series I doesn't have electronic throttle so there are less things to go wrong.
