I have a 2001 regigistered IS200 SE with 75,000 miles on the clock. The handbook shows that the timing belt should be replaced at 100,000 miles. However the Lexus dealer suggests changing it now. Does anyone have any advice on when this should be done
Thanks in anticipation, Stephen

It should be changed at 60,000 miles - i'd get it done as quickly as you possibly can as a precaution.

its 100000 miles or 6 years.
I'd agree with the 60000 figure personally as there have been several cases where the belt gets very thin............and at mileage less that 100k

Just had my 6 year 60,000 mile service (although the car has only done 42,000), so I had the cam belt changed as well. The one that came off wasn't too bad wear wise, but it did have a nick in it on one side. It may have gone on for another 10 or 20K, but it just isn't worth the risk.

We have now done in the region of 40 IS200 belt changes, I can confirm 100k is far too much for this belt, its only my opinion but there should be some kind of sticky thread about this before someone has a nasty shock.

I am afraid, my car has 101,000 km and 7 years old and after seeing what you say so I have decided to bring it this week to change the timing belt. Also noticed a vibration in the engine in N between 2,500-3,000 rpm. that goes over, I suspect that may be of tensor or pulley

Yes 3 litres would be the same. We have noticed that a stretched/worn belt can throw out the timing enough to make the car running a bit noisey/lumpy.
One car was audible rattling until the belt was changed following 100k miles.

Lexus changed mine today. 8 year old Automatic with 98000 miles. There was a little bit of fraying on the edges of the old belt but nothing too serious. They did say however that there is a known issue with the belts wearing out early on some cars and that in some instances Lexus will cover the cost of replacement dependent on age and mileage.
