Hi, I'm new here. Got a problem and need some advice.....

Just finished changing the engine on my GS300 99 sport. The bottom end went, Got a supra engine and swapped over the block and replaced the original head.

Anyway, tried turning it over after leaving the ignition in 'on' position for 6 mins due to the battery being disconnected. The car won't start?? To top that alot of the lights on the dash are showing - the ABS light is flashing, the engine light is on, aswell as the red oil light and also the orange/yellow oil light with the squiggly line under it. There is also one which shows the car from the top with what seems to be the back lights on or flashing? I don't know what this is as I lost the owners manual during a house move.

Tried connecting a OBD2 reader to the car to read the ECU to check the codes etc and reset the ECU, but it wont read it, and keeps saying that it is not connected?

Has everything been connected back up? Sounds like something has not been reconnected, which is of course quite a vague answer

Was anything else substituted during the change from the Supra that may not be as compatible as you first thought?

oil light with line underneath:- usually comes on when ignition is on, only need to worry if it comes on while your driving. means theres not enough oil in the engine.

the other light, again comes on with ignition, its a brake light out check. goes away once car is started.

does the car try and turn over? or is it dead when you turn the key?

As far as I know everything has been connceted back up. There are a few connectors which we have left off inside the car below the gear stick i.e. VSC, heated seats, power/snow button, just in case we had to adjust the gearbox selector to make sure it was selecting the correct gears when we turned the igntion to on for the first time after re-assembling, (which we did becuz when in park position it was showing as reverse on the dashboard, has been adjusted now though to show correct position).

Everything else was original from the lexus except for the bottom block and the fuel pump which were from the supra. It all fitted ok except for the oil feed line from the bottom block which had a smaller thread hole due to the supra having a sensor there instead. But we got this sorted from a local genius engineer/mechanic.

Thanks for that. The car does try to turn over, but seems a little slow when trying to do so. There is also a whining noise coming from the bottom towards the gearbox, but we've put that down to the gearbox/torque convertor which had to come off aswell, hopefully it will slowly disappear when the car is drivin back in. Apparently the same happended to my Father-in-laws Voyager when his gearbox went. His noise was the same-ish and it went after a while. However one small issue we had when putting the spak plugs back in was which position they go in?? We took a calculated guess but can't be too sure as we couldn't see any number on for the position they should be in. Any help or diagrams would be appreciated.

What concerns me the most is that the OBD2 reader says it can't connect to the ECU. It reads half way or so, then slows down and comes up with 'verify connection' or something?? I believe there is a pin method you can use to check the fault codes against the number of times the ABS light flashes. Is it true that you can reset the ECU this way aswell? Any ideas as to the correct method?

I couldn't read the OBD2 codes from my mk2 GS, with 2 different readers. However, the same device worked on a Vyker's 99 IS200.

Has anybody else had the same problem with reading codes for a Mk2 GS300??

im not sure what you mean by putting the spark plugs in the correct way.... i've not touched the engine of my gs, but previous cars i've worked on was a simple clockwise turn till tight
do the plugs have the correct gap?

sounds like the engine is flooded. have you tried to give it a little gas when starting?

where abouts in the UK are you?

It's not about making sure the sparks are put in by turning them the right way, but more so that they are in the correct order. From memory the sparks go in first then the leads are connected to the top of them. It's the leads that I am questioning. I need to make sure they fire in the correct order (If that makes sense??).

Not tried touching the gas when starting?? Will give it a go tonight after work. As mentioned before more worried about all the dashboard lights being on for now and how to try and reset the ECU given that the OBD2 reader can't do it...well not as yet anyway. I'm fairly hopeful that if I can reset the ECU the car might just start??

i understand now about leads... not looked at mine, but surely they would only reach the correct plug as the lengths would be different? im at work now, but i have the gs300 cd at home. will look about to see if i can find a picture.... if i feel brave enough i'll take the cover off mine

Thanks for that Shake. We disconnected the fuses in the correct order and the ABS light has gone out and doesn't even flash now. Thats one sorted.

Unfortunately the car is still not turning over. After a little further investigation we discovered that some of the leads connecting to the sparks have letters on them - C, E and G??? Problem is we didn't check which order they were in when we took them out initially. Silly me.....

Trying to figure how they are connected back to make sure they are in the correct firing order. If anyone has any ideas then i would very grateful.

If anybodies interested in doing me a favour, I need someone to check the configuration of the letters? Its quite easy easy to take off the VVTi cover, it is only on with 'Alan' keys. Once thats off then you should be able to see the first 2 or 3 sparks lead covers, and if you look closely there should be some letters on them. Its these letters I need to find out what goes where???
