I have a strange whining sound when moving in drive on my 1995 LS400. It sounds like some cars do in reverse, or as if I have a super charger. Does this mean I need a new gear box?
I have checked the oil levels and they are all ok and look clean.

Additional info.
I have also noticed that the noise goes away after a bit of driving.

Hi,
Does it whine when in drive stationary or when moving?

Doh read the topic fully 1st,sorry you said when moving and I didn't see that.
Still thinking about this one for you.

OK having thought about it and I assume no fault codes are being flagged even though the TX fluid looks ok if it hasn't been flushed/changed I would do that 1st along with the filter, if this sorts out the problem it's a LOT cheaper than a TX unit.

I think it could be the power steering pump, as it is whining like crazy when steering at standstill

How much does it cost for a replacement one?
And thanks for the replies Steve2006
Alexander the o.k.

As a temporary fix, try an additive to swell the seals.
In the U.S there is something called trans-seal. (the PS pump uses tranny fluid)
I have been using it for 11 years, and have yet to replace the pump at about $1100.00US.
I do however, have to top it off at the rate of about 4-5OZ every month or so.
