Full Version: Pulsing Rear Brake Lights Is200 (old Group Buy)

DJ Wozza

Hi all,

something rather nice came through the post the other day, here's a pic

I from what I have been told these are from an old group buy (organised by Mr.Morse).

They have no fitting instructions whatsoever, so I am after any info from members that have them fitted.

Do they operate as well with normal bulbs or only with the LED's ? (wondering on which is brightest)

Also if there are any video clips of them in operation that would be nice to see. I think on the
Nurburgring trip either Lee-iceman or Sparkystav had them fitted (maybe both ohmy.gif), but I didn't realise
I was getting some through the post for free (many thanks GORD biggrin.gif), so I didn't pay too much attention huh.gif

Any info gratefully received, cheers in advance

Woz

They look good man, i say do it
DJ Wozza
cheers for the fast replies fellas, apparently they flash faster the harder you brake.
Are they road legal ? Also do threy work better (brighter) with standard bulbs ?
sparkystav
They only flash when you brake hard so yes they are road legal (new mercs have the same system)

There not necessarily brighter though cause they shine forward (and possibly sideways cant remember) but they dont shine backwards onto the reflecters. but their bright enough.

And yeah both me and Lee have them.

I must of missed this when the GB went around mad.gif any plans for another?

Mr Morse doesnt come on here anymore so proberly not,

Wozza...as you have no doubt worked out, i've got them on my IS200. Only problem is the warning light on the dash comes on every now and again as the drain on the LED's isn't so great as the standard bulbs, even with those load resistors.

A picture's worth a thousand words.

Rob's Lexx
if anyone is interested in a set of these, i have a set for sale with all load resistors etc in perfect working order. pm me if interested

i took them off the car as they don't work all the time as a result of relying on a ball bearing mechanism to complete the circuit and trigger the pulse. sometimes when cornering and breaking or when there is more stress on one side, only one of the bulbs will pulse and you actually have to put on the anchors pretty hard.

when they are working they look very good, but i have something else in the pipeline that i need to get round to fittin whistling.gif

also wozza, the pulse rate is not affected by braking power, its the same throughout IIRC. be careful how u fit the load resistirs as they get VERY HOT and have the potential to melt the light housing

let us know how u get on wozza mate
roheel
yeh i would be interested in these please mate!

Not sure what you mean by this, the flashing part is incorporated into the bulbs, so without them they don't flash! tongue.gif

They don't flash faster you brake, if you shake the bulbs you'll hear a clicking. That's the tilt switch, so basically if you brake hard enough for that switch to be triggered, it flashes, otherwise the lights come on normally.

As the rear reflector on the IS works via light reflected off the back of the housing, I put these bulbs on and then took them straight off as there simply wasn't enough of a difference between the brightness of the sidelight and brightness when the brakes were on. Others may disagree but I didn't want to take the risk (having already been seriously rear ended once before).

There really isn't much to it in terms of installation, simply replace the bulbs with the new ones, and stick the load resistor between the wires going to the brake light and you're done. You don't actually even need the load resistors, they just stop the "bulb out" warning light from coming up on the dash.
DJ Wozza
Cheers bud for the info biggrin.gif

So Tango, Sparkystav, Lee_iceman do you agree they are not bright enough (re Parthiban above) as they seem bright in Lee's video ?
sparkystav
I'm quite happy with them, there bright enough for me and you've got the high brake light as well anyway. (and also the fogs if you've done that conversion)

also as for installing i just used that picture Tango put up.

Thanks Stav biggrin.gif

What happens when one of these bulbs fail ?
Where do you get a replacement ?
sparkystav
Err dunno try to find someone that doesnt want theirs anymore?

As Stav says, it wasn't exactly the brightness that was the problem, I just didn't find the difference between sidelights and brake lights large enough to make it obvious (obviously when they're flashing there's no problem)

You'll be able to see it easily if you stick one of the pulse bulbs in and leave the standard bulb in the other socket. The standard bulb will be much brighter when the brakes are on.

However, quite a few people on here have been using them for a while now with no problems so I'm sure they'll be fine and I was just being a wuss...... blush.gif

Never had a problem with them at all and they've been on the car since that GB from Mike Morse. As I mentioned earlier the warning light for a bulb out comes on now and again, even with the load resistors fitted, but it's infrequent. Flies through it's MOT smile.gif , as always.

has anyone seen this before

I gotta agree after comparing the videos ohmy.gif

and here they are fitted biggrin.gif (flashes are much better but the fps of the camera and streamed video make them look slightly odd)

They are the Mutts

If you know of anyone that wants to get rid of theirs, please give me a shout

You can use these instead: Autoillumination

You need to fit LED bulbs and just wire the box inline with the wiring but its pretty simple. (one each side)

But give the same effect,

aye, tis what myself and stav have fitted.

work every time the brake pedal is pressed (not just under heavy braking). they look really really good (faster/higher pulse rate over the other type) and serve a purpose.

well reccomended

Now you tell me!!! They are cheap too!

Just bought one of the other sets!

Interesting stuff, I had always assumed that these pulsing brake lights were illegal, and couldn't understand why people would want to fit them. Now I can see the advantage, and that they're perfectly legal.

Just noticed this. Are these still legal (pass MoT), with the pulsing *every* time the brake pedal is pressed ?

Won't this annoy people following you in heavy traffic where you keep using the brake ?

Also, I've looked at that site before but found the number of different bulbs bewildering. Which ones are the brightest/most suitable, is it the most expensive ones, e.g the ones at the very top of the list with the "3W" LED ?

Yep I'd have to agree, it would seriously irritate me if I was stuck in a traffic jam behind a car who's brake lights kept flashing at me..............the way society is today (especially in London) I wouldn't want to take the risk. In my view it should only work under heavy braking as in those circumstances it could help avoid accidents.
PCIronmike
I think they are sweet , I've seen Wozza's brake lights first hand and they only flash when you brake hard , when you brake normaly they are the same as standard brake lights so IMO they could be an indicator to the driver behind them stating that the car in front has just braked hard so beware . Maybe this is just me but I'm sure Merc wouldn't use the system if it wasn't any good .

Paul.

Definatly annoying to flash all the time!

If you are sat in traffic holding your foot on the brake, would they flash continuously? wont want that!

No they don't flash all the time, just for the first 2 seconds every time you apply the brakes, but in stop start traffic they're going to be flashing a lot!

Yep I'm not talking about the ones Wozza's got, those ones are fine, they've got a tilt switch in them so only flash when you brake hard smile.gif
Rob's Lexx
to clarify:

they pulse for 2 seconds at 20 pulses per second (less in your face/annoying than say 10 pulses per second). Then illuminate as a solid light. Never seen anyone getting peeved in a traffic jam and in fact had some people who have followed me into a petrol station for example say that they are a very good idea and deffo make the following driver more aware.

As for legality, strictly speaking they are not legal as they do not provide a solid light, but the other 3 lights do (i have it wired so the fogs pulse and the other 3 don't), so i had no issue with my MOT. they are a piece of cake to disconnect just for MOT anyhow.....

i've had plod behind me several times and they didn't seem fussed.....besides, with this setup, the bulb looks completely standard (because it is) whistling.gif

and you'll find that the tilt switch will eventually stick on one or maybe both sides!! i had this, as did mike morse, as have other people i've seen with them. Ends up where only one side pulses and the other is illuminates normal....

Completely agree with rob. Only thing that makes them illegall for me and Rob is the fact we have them on the fog lights and the fog has to be solid on.

Another problem with these is if your slightly cornering or anything they tend to flash at different times.

Stav
Rob's Lexx
the fog is a solid light when its being used as a fog whistling.gif , but yea, for standard driving it isn't. mind you, JDM spec jap cars have the fog-to-brake conversion, as do the yank IS's so its not hard to inform the MOT tester of that whistling.gif

either way, just unclip them for an MOT if its a concern for anyone.

as stav mentions, when cornering the tilt switch type bulbs either only work on one side, or will pulse at different times and looks a bit odd.

any of the tower ones msn-wink.gif
maybe the SMT Tower II's best.

sparkystav
Yeah has to be the tower LED's as the lights work by reflecting the light that comes out sideways, so if you just have the forward pointing ones their not that bright.
