Who needs a diesel eh

The misses went from Oxford to Nottingham and back yesterday, managing a mighty impressive 39.8 mpg on 'tank average' on getting back.

I couldn't believe it so checked myself, and sure enough it was there... We've both noticed that the MPG is improving with mileage (23k), so the future looks good for this petrol

Anyone beat that?

I regularly get 40-41 avg mpg on trips to and from Thetford. Occasionally it has hit 48 mpg but that's usually gone down again after the Thorney bypass.

Believe it or not I got mine up to 48 mpg average on a 100 mile trip along the M5 & M6 ...all on cruise control at a steady 70 mph. Slightly different driving style on the way back though ...back to 28.4.

Not exaggerating, I averaged 59mpg on the M25 couple of weeks back (400 mile trip). Its not been consistent since then, I average 35-38 everyday.

hold on a minute, 59mpg on a 400 mile trip from an IS250..your trip computer is telling pork pies!

I'm lucky to see 35 when i'm at the wheel... but the misses is thinking mid 40's will be on when she heads up to manchester next week.

my point is - now that diesel is so pricey, how long before people stop buying them?

I would like to think the same, wish I had captured it, could have posted it here. Surprisingly, it worked on that trip because I had nearly half tank left. I have realised that if you fill the tank and then cruise 60-65 miles an hour on the motorway, the average shoots up and then if you maintain the speed it will stay for a while.

Lexus claim about 40 mpg for extra urban and 31 mpg combined.

There are half a dozen IS250s showing on Spiritmonitor - the best shows an overall average of 33.4 mpg - the worst 24 mpg - mine comes about the middle of the group.

59 mpg average for a tank would be some kind of miracle, but I can understand instantaneous indications at that level. The best I have ever had for a single tank was just over 40 mpg (used mainly on a single motorway journey to the Lakes and back).

After I'd filled up at the Shell filling station near J40 of the M1 and drove down the road into Wakefield, mine said 70 mpg avg. It's a 30 limit and downhill all the way. It went back to normal on the way up again though. ;-)

My IS200 indicates nearly 80mpg when I come down the M25 from the Reigate A217 junction....

The only way to get a true figure is to brimfill each time.

I've had 43mpg reported on runs from Cambridge to Ipswich (probably around 40 in reality) along the A14 at a steady 70mph.

I'm mightily impressed. I'm sure it's also getting better as the car mileage goes up (now up to 8000 miles) - or perhaps it's just the warmer weather.

My 220d - 36 mpg standard. 39mpg with DPS4 (It does work!)

As you can tell by the amount of cars, I've got tales of woe with my 220d. I have a feeling they have sorted the newer ones to some degree. I am currently waiting for sales to call me with a deal for a 250 auto. With mid thirty on a run and a 14p difference in petrol and diesel it's a no brainer, I've had diesels for the past 12 years and think this one will be the last. The new beemer petrols are even hitting mid forties!

I agree on the petrol/deisel choice. I have a 250 sel and regularly get lat 30s on ave and can get into the 40s on a long run. I think i drive sensibly with the occassional mad half hour (plus got wallopped for speeding a year or so ago and don't want to pay that means-tested fine again)
Today I have a loaner 220 sport as mine is in the dock - got 45.6 after zeroing the ave but paid silly money for a litre - and - this is just my opinion so don't shoot me - the car might as well be called something completely different because it is a world away from mine.
I got 47 out of a previous deisel loaner over a 300 mile trip.

On the future - the price rises are due to increase demand in emerging countries - mostly China - most of the demand is for industry (what isn't made in China these days) and industry uses deisel - hence the price difference. Their is no shortage of crude - (especially heavy/sour) the bottleneck is the refinery and the demand plus speculators. Lean petrol or hybrid is the way to go - IMO.

I've just done a return trip to Newcastle (460 miles) and achieved a tank average of 37.9 (the car only has 600 miles on the clock) at a clock indicated 80 MPH (roughly 75 I think).

I'm so pleased I dumped the diesel.
