My local garage has told me that the oil for the box is special on my 1999 Ls 400 is thi right or can it be bought from somewhere other than lesus

They are correct you must use Toyota type IV transmission fluid only.
BTW welcome to LOC please feel free to introduce yourself to other members and tell us a little more about yourself and your Lexus.
