my tyres are currently 215/40/18 and i would like to buy 225/40/18 instead mostly for the reason to help protect my rims from being kerbed,as it stands the tyres on the wheels look like they could benefit from this, just wanted to know if it would be ok
cheers

Changing to 225's won't stop kerbing damage. Tyres with "rim protector" may help but even these will not eliminate the problem. A mate put chrome protectors on his wheels and they did work but they affected the look of the wheels too.

just found this on the toyo web site
Rim Protector
QUOTE
Alloy wheels are expensive items, so you don't want to damage them. Many Toyo high performance tyres have a protruding lip, a rim flange protector, at the point where the wheel rim and tyre meet. So if you happen to make a mistake (we're all human, after all), it's the tyre's rubber ridge, rather than your costly alloy wheel, that takes the knock
i think thats what im trying to say i basicly want a tyre that has this as mine doesnt, looking at falkens fk452

I put those on the back of my old sport, 275/35/18. Really good tyres. I was looking online but needed them quickly. Tyre place under the arches in SponEnd got them same day for me £135 each fitted etc. Your size would be cheaper.

275/35/18 are £115.80 from Camskill, add on fitting, valve, balancing and probably not a lot of difference..........and they sent a driver to other side of Banbury for them so I could have them the same morning.
The F452 seemed really good. I went to south coast and were fairly quiet on the M5, also nice grip on country roads after the 1st couple of hundred miles.

225's will be better as the 215's are a very tight fit if you have a 7.5" or 8" rim,

with 215's the wheel rim sticks out more

225's should be Ok mate and they will help toward protrusion of the rim and the rim protector in the tyre will do its job more effectively because its not stretched over the rim as much . I had 215/35-19's on the back of mine but I changed the rears to 225/35-19's for the very same reason , I'm gonna do the fronts when I wear the others out .
Regards
Paul.

I thought that on an IS200 with 18" wheels 225/40/18 was the recommended tyre size anyway?

Understandable.

I really should have mentioned GS not IS.
275 might be a little too wide for an IS
