Daily Telegraph, 7th Oct: iPod to slip from top says Apple co-founder

Apple’s iPod music player is about to end its run as market leader, says the company’s co-founder. Steve Wozniak, the electronics engineer who began Apple with Steve Jobs in 1976, said the iPod’s domination of the MP3 market would soon end. Mr Wozniak also predicted that the technology industry is headed towards a similar version of the dotcom crash.

There is a member who will either be in tears or contradicting your info with 100's of others saying the opposite.

Seriously though, what is that based on? What's the rival that will end Apple's domination? I thought it would happen when phones could store large amounts of music..........why carry 2 devices when you can carry one? But they proved me wrong...........

still never understood whats so special about ipods and why people like them so much.

I like mine - it's simple to use and I don't mind iTunes.

What's odd is what will replace it - something has to be at the top of the sales charts and I'm not sure what would replace it. 'iPod' has entered the language in much the same way as 'hoover' or 'sellotape'. People call their mp3 players iPods even if they actually aren't.

I would tell you what is (mostly) going to replace iPods if I thought you would believe me.

Very true, I have a Sony Walkman Mp3 player (great player, software sux a lot tho) & I call it an iPod.
Funny how a "Walkman" became a personal cassette player of the 80's & 90's irrespective of who made it,
and now an "iPod" has become the 21st century equivalent irrespective of the manufacturer

25% or above is classed as a monopoly. Apple enjoys a 76% market share of the MP3 market....Co Founder or not, his predictions show no signs of being a reality, Specially with the new line up of iPods ready for the Xmas boom!

Think its either peoples stupidity or wishful thinking when they call their mp3 players iPods.....clearly their is difference....

Well, it's not just iPods, but the iTunes system itself. I've been a hi-fi fan for 50+ years. Have 1000s of LPs AND also same of CDs. But my ears tell me that 'Lossless' downloads sound as good (if not better than...it's the PLAYERS that vary) as CDs; so.....I'm sticking most of my music on an outboard hard drive now. Can stick it on 'Shuffle' and hear all my stuff appear in glorious sound into the hi-fi from my iMac. (via a good d/a) Srajan , who runs 6 Moons hi fi review site, in his current review of Red Wine Isabella' pre-amp, has (finally!) come to the same conclusion as I have! And I can use iPod via (proper!) headphones for same result!
I guess things WILL change as hand held computers/phones get more complex, but the SOUND QUALITY is what I want (I don't even have a Mobile phone; perhaps why I'm not in debt! (- ) So the system will remain.
I'm a happy convert. Anyone want 1500 miscellaneous LPs? And same of CDs (once I've downloaded them!)
