Hi guys,

Need some advice.

For the past week or so i've heard a metallic clicking type rattle/rumble (almost like 2 pieces of metal hitting each other) when i've been pulling away gently from stationary.

At first i thought it was the clutch making the noise when it gets to a certain point (clutch release bearing perhaps??) but now i'm not so sure as i've noticed it doing it when i gradually accelerate when the car is rolling slowly, in gear, with no foot on the clutch.

does anyone have any idea what it might be?

Another thought i had was could it be the exhaust rattling??
rig-pig
one of the exhaust heat sheilds that are bolted to car like the big one above the back box

any other thoughts on this?? how easy is it to see/fiddle with that heat shield you refer to?

i noticed that when the car is stationary and i rev it, it makes a similar noise at 1000rpm. The noise is loader when pulling away, but its basically the same.

so my thinking is that its some sort of vibration that hits a certain frequency at 1000rpm and causes the rattle to be heard.

any thoughts??

I had something similar on mine, it was the heatshield underneath the supercharger hitting the pipe bit sticking out underneath.

you realy need it up on a ramp m8 any good garage will take a look for you

still unsure on this noise.....

it doesn't really make any noise when just revving the engine, but when pulling away slowly you can hear it.does that still sound like an exhaust heat shield?? if so, how do i get at it to have a nosey??

a pic of what might be the culprit would be really helpful if possible.

cheers

Think its that supercharger mate? think you should just let me have it, so i can check it on mine

Have you checked the s/c mounting bracket mate to see if its still nice and tight? or the manifold heat sheilds?

Mate it's not that your supercharger cradle has snapped is it?

The bit that goes from the cradle to the back of the engine snapped on mine and made a metallic clanging noise!

Thats what i meant above as i'd heard of a couple that did that, my brothers did it and made the same type of noise? 1 of the cradle legs broke away?

did it rattle all the time?? or just when pulling away slowly??

daft question but is it dangerous to run the car with that piece snapped?? how can it be repaired/replaced?? a TTE direct jobby??

I took the cradle off and got my welder out and fixed my brothers, cant remember him having any probs with it while it was broken? but did rattle

Nah just take it off mate, if it's the one that goes from the cradle to the back of the engine block, just unbolt it from the engine and chuck it in the bin!

Mine did 20,000 miles without it, and then did another 30,000 miles on the next car without it, and I don't know where it went after that :D

It was just extra strength but you don't need that bit if it is it - should be easy to spot - just run and pop the bonnet now and see if you can twang it!

It's like the bonnet lining, some cars with superchargers rip the crap out of it, others don't touch it, I think the cradle didn't account for all of the variances in the height of the engine so that's why it snaps as it's a weak fracture point :)

just had a nosey guys and its sound as a pound. no play or anything. one thing i did notice, might be the norm, but that strut is pretty much touching the exhaust manifold cover thingy (well i think thats what it is - big black heat shield over the manifold??) does that sound as if it could be the cause of this noise?? be strange though as the noise only developed in the last few months??

any other areas might be good to check??

Can you see them touching if you start the car up while the bonnet is up?
