Cars been in today to have the rattly dash sorted, rubbing boot and also wanted the fuel economy looking at as it has dropped in the last week or so to mid 30's from 40-42mpg car also felt sluggish.

Garage have replaced the EGR valve but didn't say any more, so not sure if 5th injector or engine management was done, any way after being stood in traffic for 45 minutes and a swift drive home, car felt smoother, more responsive, sat in 6th better and I got a healthy 41.9mpg.

What causes the EGR valve to clog up, car only has 22K miles on and I regularly do 50minute drives on the motorway to work?

I'm on my third EGR (and had all the other mods too!). Still sitting at early 30's MPG.

Back in next week, mpg has improved but on Tuesday morning on a hour drive 80% motorway it felt like there was nothing there below 2000rpm, on the motorway was just swapping between 4 & 5th gear all the way, no way I could get in 6th.

On the way home back to normal, no particularly good at the best of times but in the morning it wasn't driveable.

There was no warning lights, anyone else had this? can Lexus get more out of this engine and make it feel like it has 175bhp and 400nm? as at the moment it feels like it has no where near, or is it just mine.

Tash - mine was like that all the time at the end...but it had never had the EGR valve changed AFAIK - it wasn't rcognised as being a "consumable item" huh.gif whilst I had the car (2years 4 month, 20k from new).

One thing about the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to note: It traps pollutants, but is self cleaning - and should therefore last the life of the car/engine (in theory). However, in order to clean itself, it has to run at very high temperatures. You'll probably find that the car "misbehaves" when it's doing this, and that could be one reason why you get inconsistent performance...I was always perplexed about this for the first 10 months of onership when my car ran relatively well (consistently 39-45mpg)...and then read up on it by chance on a website.

Car has gone back in due to poor performance, but the fuel economy is now OK, well 40mpg fine, garage are keeping it for a week and wont give it back until they are satisfied. Technician said there is some known issues and we will look at these.....interesting, whats the thoughts on these are other than 5th injector and EGR

I have a 2K miles 58reg IS220d SE-L (I think, could be an SE) with MM, and it is a joy to drive, goes like you would expect the 220d to go, and even has a dulled diesel gruffness, bit like the BMW's. Just wonder has there been considerable modifications to the engines between mine a March 07 to now?

Car feels the same in all other aspects other than the engine which is a lot more driveable.

Last time the dealer gave me a 220D as a courtesy car he apologised laugh.gif Seems like the dealers prefer the 250 too.

Didn't really answer the question Tango?

The loaner is really nice to drive, each time mine has been in over the last month I have had a 250 auto and even though are very nice to drive and economical for a large petrol they are not what you call fast...even though I was very impressed with both the 250 auto's I have to say I prefer the 58 reg 220d.

Got the car back and was told the second egr valve was replaced? as in the IS220d has two egr valves, is this the case.
