Full Version: Using Oe Sat Nav Screen For Other Sources.

Following on from another thread on here I thought this topic deserved it's own, so here goes.

For some time I've wondered about the possibilities of using the OE sat nav screen for showing DVDs or playing a PS2 type games console. Recently I saw a member had succesfully fitted a reversing camera using the screen as a display so I'm now looking into the work / cost involved of a tasty install. Now I'll own up and say that I'm not the most clued up on gadgets and leccy things (I prefer nuts and bolts myself) so would be greatful if we could keep things as simples as possible.

Currently I have more questions than input so would like to know of anyones experinece / ideas of this.

The ideal set up for me would be;
1. An audio only source for iPods / MP3 players. I belive the GROM aux in is currently a pretty good option for this.
2. A reverse camera install with video only feed. (Ideally with an automatic switching function).
3. An in car DVD player with both audio and video feed.
4. A PS2 in car, again with an audio and video feed. For simplicity it may be best to JUST fit the PS2 in order to use the games and DVD playing functions.
5. The DVD / PS2 (or other sources) would need some sort of auto switching system. Ideally this would switch in the audio and video as a matched pair.
Other members may have additional requirements such as freeview tuners, car PC hook up etc.

Currently I'm happy to use the OE sat nav screen but I understand some members will have binned this and be running an aftermarket head unit with or without an integral screen. Not sure what connection options are available so would be keen to hear from anyone with any ideas.

Obviously cost is a major issue with a topic like this and covering all bases as far as resonable cost and using quality components may cause the odd disagreement.
I have emailed a Lexus Soarer specialist and got some quotes that were a bit on the high side. I am willing to do as much as possible myself and would be keen to learn whatever I can.

For those who have not seen the earlier info/questions etc on this please see THIS THREAD.

If we could keep all replies relating to additional sources on this new thread that would would be great.

redz_UK
have covered this many times..

can do the nav conversion box. single source with auto switching is about £120, dual input with auto switch and input selector about £150

will need an aux in convertor for the oem stereo or an fm transmitter..

OK redz_uk, you have an order for 1 box for me, if it will work on my 05 SE Nav. 1 or 2 inputs, I don't really mind at the moment.

I have read your post http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/ind...showtopic=51700 but it does not say what to buy from where and how to fit, obviously you were looking for more people to want this mod.

Thanks for the info.

Didn't realise that this was ongoing. Excellent to find an affordable solution in the UK.

Redz - when you say you need an aux-in is that just the piece of kit from GROM or is there some other thing required.

Also How do you get the video from the iPod onto the screen. I understand there are some RCA / phone wires available.
Do these just plug into the aux -in?

Aplogoies for sounding a bit thick in the questions but stuff like this is a bit new to me.

Cheers,

TM
