Came across this site which claims it makes a chip that can increase the Altezza's power by 17BHP. Apparently its a soft flasher that re-writes some of the ECU map.
Can this be done and has anyone tried it?

Personally I'd give that a wide berth as it's not mapped for UK fuel.
If you really want a chip or an ECU the best thing would be to pick up an aftermarket ECU and then have it mapped for your exact car and with the best fuel available to you locally
17bhp does sound very optimistic gain wise for an NA!

Yeah ive asked them about the fuel and ill try and get a dyno plot of an actual Altezza off them too.
Problem with an aftermarket ECU is they are £400+ which is a bit much.

That's because they actually work though mate, no end of people buy these things and find they've been ripped off - admittedly Toyota do run their ECUs rich a lot of the time so you do have room to play but don't expect 17bhp - it sounds like they're mapped for American cars but their fuel uses a slightly different rating - MON as opposed to RON.
Your best bet may be to keep an eye out for a second hand ECU as they do come up a lot across the Jap car sites, then it would just need tuning.
To give you an idea some of the IS guys who had fully blown aftermarket ECUs with custom maps were lucky to get 6bhp out of an NA car and that was with other mods too!
What have you done to your car so far as their maybe something better for the cash?

That's a good point actually - they're listing cars on there that don't even have an OBD-II port or aren't OBD-II compliant!
My car for example is listed - it has the port but it doesn't talk the protocol, only VOBD or WOBD, something like that, I'd guess yours may be the same being a JDM market car?

All I have on mine at the moment is a Apexi Power intake and a 2 1/2" cat back dual exit exhaust. I wasnt really expecting 17BHP but i would really like to get rid of the flat spot at about 3500 to 4500.
