Full Version: Cost To Replace Discs And Pads?

Afternoon all,

I've just acquired a well used but lovely 99V MK4 LS400. Sadly I've discovered (my own fault for not checking before buying) that possibly all 4 discs need replacing. It stops well enough but there's a fair bit of shuddering under hard braking. I feel like an idiot for forgetting to check on the test drive and getting some money off on that account, but hey ho, that's a lesson learnt I guess.

Now, the question is, does anyone have an idea what it'll cost to replace all these bits? I'd want to use original parts, but don't want to go to Lexus MK (I'm based in Milton Keynes) as they'll charge a fortune. From what I can gather all the parts are about £300, but I've no idea what sort of labour is involved. Any pointers would be much appreciated!

i'm new to lexus so don't know exactly - so only talking thru experience of other cars.

Assuming they are not captive hubs it shouldn't be a big job - to be honest its a fairly easy DIY job on other cars. I would be surprised if its more than 2-3 hrs. Cost wise it depends on where you take it -

It shouldn't be a challenge even for places like kwik fit, but personally I would take it to a local garage at around £30 per hour (well thats what mine charges)

Thanks. Taking it to a local garage I trust tomorrow, even though they've only ever done tyres for me before. Will update the thread on the result and associated costs.

Ask about 'Blueprint' Japanese parts, good quality

Don't know if they are available for '99 model, I have Blueprint front discs,they have been perfecly OK.

I had my new set off ebay from a main lexus dealer selling off old stock.

I paid £30 for a genuine new lexus pair.

There is a lot of main dealer parts coming up on ebay from old stock. Must be the credit crunch.

Just watch and wait, As they do turn up. There's also a lot of aftermarket discs about now or you can do a supra brake upgrade.

please tell me more about Supra brake upgrades?

My front discs appear to need replacement and I was wondering if there was any upgraded brake option I could fit without spending silly money.

My car is a 1999 Mk4

You already have 4-piston alloy calipers and 315mm discs, which are often used as an upgrade on Soarers, and on Supras fitted with the "Japanese-spec" 2-piston sliding calipers.

The "UK-spec" Supra brakes are 4-piston with 325mm discs, so there's not really any point in changing.

I had mine, both front & rear replaced 3 years ago by a Lexus specialist garage, cost £596 including a full service
At the next service they found front disks were warped (I'm not a hard driver / in braking) and they were replaced under warranty

Discs are super simple to replace. You could do it yourself if you've got a spare hour. All you need is some copper grease, sand paper, screwdriver and some spanners.

If you're stuck let me know.

would have changed mine myself but the sods were absolutely WELDED on...

in the end had to take it to my local mechanic who with the help of a drill and torch managed to get the disks off.

The tutorial I wrote on my GS should cover the LS procedure if you fancy having a go. It is really very simple.
