Hi Guys

I work for a Honda main dealer as a salesman but I drive a IS200 its a 04 so due a belt in the very near future. Now my problem is do I trust one of the mechanics to do it on the side for me or do I take it to Lexus. How hard is the job to do I am not mechanicly minded so do you think a Mechanic with 20 yrs expereince would be able to the the belt on a 200 without ever doing one before. Or do I just take it to lexus Newcastle then if anything goes wrong they have to pay for it to be fixed.

Next question is what is the besr price you guys have had from Lexus to do a belt .

Cheers

Your Honda tech should be able to change the belt on the IS200, as you say he has 20 years experience of being a tech/mechanic.

Make sure you change the idler and tensioner not just the belt. As most of the front end will be stripped down I suggest you replace the waterpump- its easier to change now rather than later (saves labour/parts costs later).

I got a quote from my Lexus garage 2 years ago and they quoted me £550 to replace the cambelt, idler and tensioner. In the end I bought the parts from Lexus for £120 and did the cambelt change myself (on my driveway) with help from my uncle who is a mechanic by trade.

Lexus charge a fixed £299 for timing belt replacement - doubt that will include the idler etc though.

Your Honda guys would easily be capable though. Just buy the kit for around 120 and get the idler etc and they will do it no problems.

Waterpump is about £100 from Lexus. You could go for a patterned part for 1/2 the price.

There's even a walkthrough on how to change the timing belt, here.

A blueprint water pump is available - part number is ADT39185 and is about £60 from camskill but you will probably get it cheaper from any factor that stocks ADL blueprint parts .

check out their website for nearest stockist to your postcode.
