Just wondering, does it do any harm (starter motor, battery etc) if a car is turned for say 5 seconds and longer? This is nothing to do with wether it starts or not, it's just that I ask this because i always been lead to believe that it can be bad for a car. Just want to know the truth.

nope no harm at all but after a while(approx ten,fifteen mins your battery will go flat and your starter will get very hot)
