I just bought a 2006 GS 300. It drives great, the only concern I have is that when I select drive I hear a faint clunk towards the back of the car. Is this common? i assume this is a transmission issue. Will a fluid change resolve the issue or is it something more serious?

Thanks in advance,
D

I have spoken (over the phone) to Nottingham Lexus and was told that the clunk was a characteristic of Lexus'. Is this right?

A bit more info:
The clunk comes from the back of the car. If I move the gear from Park to Neutral and leave it there for a while then move into Drive I don't get the clunk, if I go from P to D or R to D relatively quickly I get the clunk.

Any help is appreciated.

Not experienced this on my GS430 or my previous GS300.

Hi,

If I select drive or a gear while my foot is on the brake there is never any clunk.

50% of the time if I selkect a gear without my foot on the brake I will get a clunk/judder.

I recon it's normal.......just select drive whilst pressing the brakes.

Merry Xmas. Tony.

Thanks for the responses.

Tony, the faint clunk I hear towards the back of the car occurs when my foot is on the brake so it sounds like it will need looking at.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks,
Dean

Dean,

I have the same with ours.

I am also really wondering what it is. I've tried to see if putting an additiv in the gearbox to smoothen gearchanges would help and it somehow did. But I've never had such clunk in any other car bar a RWD Ford Scorpio automatic.

Anyone any thoughts?

Whether it's a similar setup on the GS I don't know but on the LS worn transmission mounts can cause this and the rubber coupling on the propshaft gives this effect.

Thanks for the info.

So is it easy to replace this rubber? or do you need to dismantle half the car?

Also, any risks if you do not replace this rubber?

I went in to see Lexus today about the clunk. They have told me that its actually wear in the diff that is causing it. They said it's not anything I should worry about but that if I did want to fix it they would have to take apart the whole diff and replace the worn parts - or just replace the whole diff.

Cheers for all your help.
