goto the control panel then add/remove programs
in there will be a section windows components remove windows messenger and msn messenger (if installed also)
this will get rid of messenger
also to stop anyone reinstalling and using messenger set the firewall to block the program and its ports and password protect the firewall

even though mine has it enabled i have never had one
but what was weird is that i set my mate up on the net using freeserve.. all hopy and working.. his kid has a go and the pop up appears 15 mins of being online.
first time i had ever seen one ... well apart from over a network in my old office.
reckon its untracable and it will be the next big thing.

could be because you are behind a firewall (either that - or your IP address isn't the 217.35.12.nnn one I just tried)

XP has a built in firewall- that is turned on by default. (lose2k dosn't)
so - unless you have turned it off yourself - you are behind a firewall

you could try the Hosts trick
its all pretty simple just a file to copy and paste and it blocks nasty pop ups and ads

run an antivirus as from my past experience i had a virus which kept popping up windows of pron.
also try running adaware software (freeware i think) it will remove any spyware are nasty programs causing havoc.
as other members have suggested use pop up killer software.
(information came form my son)
