Full Version: Handy Tip To Avoid Speed Cameras
Lexus Owners Club > General Lexus Forums > Lexus Owners Club Lounge
JohnRX400h
Apologies is this has been mentioned before but my dealer er sorry a 'friend' gave me this fabby tip to avoid getting Gatsoed.

In the Lex DVD SatNav you can mark specific points so you can find your way back there or when you want to go to a point on the map with no address, so...

Every time you pass a speed camera hit 'MARK' and then edit the marked piont to a specific icon (mine are the :excl: mark) and also enable the 'beep when near' facility.

Hey presto - whenever you drive near a speed camera you have marked before you get the slow down er sorry accident black spot take care 'beep'.

Excellent idea - pity I don't have Sat Nav! :D

Will need to see if that works in our CR-V.

I never, ever speed. Especially not on the Marlow Bypass or M4 on the way to the pub from the curry house. Neither do any of the othe Lexus' or Toyotas that were following :whistling:

...or trying to follow in my case! I know so many ppl that've been booked by the cops on that bypass that I was trying not to speed. It was a choice of keeping up or getting lost though :iraqi-info-minister:
UKPulse
But you can only "mark" about 100 points on the current satnav system, and there's probably about three times that number of gatso's in Sussex alone!! ;)

Eek, that's the only place I've really been tempted by, I know some mechanics that use that for road testing as there's never been any police presence there. Best think again me'thinks.

BTW, hubby was driving...I'd have been a little easier to keep up with ;)

WHAT.....you mena i gota LOOK for the damn signs now.. :P

And if you see the big yellow things then it's time to check your speed. Subtle, very subtle. Saw a car go through a yellow painted camera with signs before it a few weeks ago. Guy must have been asleep - dangerous at that speed.
JohnRX400h
Ok Ok Ok

Slow down - yes
Keep eyes open - yes

etc etc etc

HOWEVER still think it is a trick thing to use the Sat Nav for!!!!!!!!!
Brettster
If you have a Pocket PC with TOM TOM Navi on it you can get free UK wide Speed camera POI overlays for free and there's also some free software that shouts at you when your coming up to one, Can also be used to tell you what speed any road is and tell you to slow down on that road if your going too fast on it. Not bad for a freebie

Ok I knew someone would want to know...thanks Ryan :P :P

Right, on the back of the camera, in the top right and left hand corners, you will see two circular holes a bit bigger than the size of a 2p piece. More visible now with the new yellow covers!

If there is a gray (the main colour of the camera) plate covering them, from inside, then this is the blanking plate...meaning that there is no film inside!

Now if these two holes appear to be open (Black in colour) or have two key locks showing in the holes, then this is the film cartridge locked, loaded and ready to take your snap!

A little hard to explain, but next time you pass one, take a look and you will see what I mean. :D

Although I am personally 100% sure that what I have written above is true (tried and tested on many occassions), please don't go shooting through gatso's.....just incase!!

By the way there is no escape from the new digital ones...although very rare, they are out there and always ready!!

It's a PITA when there's no time to check your makeup for the camera :) :) :)

the gatso is a fearsome tool for sure. But a radar detector is a fool proof way to save your bacon. or rather save you from the bacon....

That said, the little fu :tsktsk: ers seem to be near trafficlights that also set it off. best to just go past em all at a sensible speed.

the ones that bug me are the specs overhead ones. they work on average speed I think... cant jam or detect them. but if you do nt spot em you deserve to be shopped anyway....

the ones facing you (truvelo) work off sensors in the road so if you see it and your speeding, you are done for!

hope this helps some poor fool with a lead foot...

I've heard this story before.... and I personally don't believe it.

The two holes should always show gray metal behind them - if they appear dark, or have locks showing, its an indication that the speed camera has not been closed properly. If you pass a camera everyday and it changes from grey to dark (or vice versa) - its a good indication that its been opened - either for a film change, camera (de)installation or turned around and then not closed properly. If you don't believe me, have a look at one of those lovely :nuke: gatso's :nuke: - see if there is a lense behind the upper glass plate and then go round the back and look at the holes!

And while we are on the topic of speed camera's - anybody know how to fix a TSS Laser500 device?
TSS Site - no images though!

TSS quote £140+ to repair ..... its not worth that just for a play :whistling:

i was told last week that you cannot get done for speeding if the camera is pointed at you. All to do with Invasion of privacy laws.

someone should check it out....

Fever.. ask your uncle if this is true?

That would be incorrect..

In english Law there is no right to privacy, the legal rights to privacy come under the eurpoean convention on human rights, which are supposed to be taken into account in every judicial decision, but they are at best vague. there is certainly no written legislation regarding privacy yet, anything we have comes under common law (precedents set in cases)

The the reason they are vague is to enable governments to use things such as cctv / speed cameras because it is in the public interest to do so

However if someone was to take a photo of you in a comprimising situation (and im not talking about a picture from the digital speeding camera), and then got it published then you would be able to begin an action under the defamation / libel laws (tort) (this comprimising picture
is important because your reputation has been damaged), but there is no legal right to privacy
Another example would be a telephoto lens photos of people in private houses / beaches come under laws of tresspass

the only poss way your really going to escape prosecution is if the authority has not warned you that the camera was there, Otherwise unlucky.
Steve
oh right

hmmm so this pic of Matt Mcnally at the last committee meet would be against the privacy laws then?

hehehe - as you know - I normally travel in my slippers - but fortunately, I was going to the meet at the Ace Cafe last night, so put a pair trainer type things on.

Got up this morning - hadn't packed my shoes - so had to wear these trainers to work!

If I hadn't being going the meet - I would have had to turn up in Homer Simpson slippers and a suit!

just cost me 65 notes for a pair of shoes to wear for the next three days

Steve, asked my uncle and to back up fargo's post further, unfortunately its not true! They use then more now so that you can't shift the blame saying that someone else was driving the car!!
I've heard this story before.... and I personally don't believe it.
Jnewland, the info I posted is true mate...its not a myth. The gray plate covers the holes at the back, so that nothing can be put through them....it is lowered when the film cartridge is inserted and the hole's allow the locks to be visable so the film can be locked in place.

Matt how often do you have to change your nappy??

So Fever,, what are you saying is not true, the Right to Privacy issue ??
UKPulse
Forward facing cameras are fine with me - I'll just take the bike! If they can track me down from the type of bike, helmet and leathers, then good luck to 'em B)

...not that I speed of course :whistling: :whistling:
Claire G
Won't your number plate give you away

:withstupid:
UKPulse
Not unless they develop a camera that can detect that the oncoming 'speeder' is a motorcycle rather than a car, and quickly swivel round as the bike goes past to take a photo of the number on the back ;)

Actually I'll bet the technology probably exists, but they'd have to spend some of the money they wring out of motorists on actually dealing with with motoring problems..... no chance of that then

Marked points, hmmm... The DVD based navigation system can store up to 100 marked points. In addition to that, I guess you could use "Area to avoid" of which you can store another 10. Trouble is, if you live in London for example, you're stuffed. According to the Transport for London web site, there are 600 fixed cameras in the Metropolitan Police area alone! :duh:

I drove into a pub car park the other night at 6.15pm as an old Rover was leaving in a hurry. The 2 guys inside the car had spent 10 mins eying up all the cars. They then broke the rear window of a new Audi and stole a brief case.
Some one had alerted the police but they arrived too late.
You can bet that if someone reported me looking into the back of a speed camera I would be caught within 2 minutes!
Brian Berry
Concerning the question about rights, some lawyers are questioning and using the Court of European Rights directive that one cannot be made under penalty of law to answer a question which would convict you.
i.e. Please answer on the form if you were the driver exceeding the 30mph speed limit on....

However should the police catch you speeding and produce the corroborating evidence and either warn you on the spot or serve a Notice of Intended prosecution within 14 days you and your licence have problems.
