My wife has recently been converted to the usefulness of the rev counter and has started driving in lower gears with a resulting improvement in acceleration.

I wondered how others drove with respect to refinement vs performance.

I'm assuming a steady speed on the flat without major hazards.

BTW I use 3rd normally.

Depends, around town I use 3rd, but when on straight road I drop it into 4th to preserve economy...

What about first gear - seem to remember doing 30 in first (could be wrong - will test on the way home tonight!)

I believe I have managed 30 in all gears... not recommend if you want to overtake in a top gear, or a blown engine in 1st...

Best for responce would be 2/3 but cruising would be sitting in 4th, and if its sunday and I have Alan P on the radio the bady slips itself into 6th :-)

30? If the roads are 30 mph, mine normally sits in 5th / 6th (if a little faster). Will cruise at 34mph at 40mpg in sixth!

However, I really don't trust the mpg indicator much :-)

Can e-Shift along at 30mph in 3rd, 4th or 5th... but I usually leave it in "D" and let the car decide

Yep, you can do 30 in 1st!

Normally do it in 2nd, 3rd or 4th if I'm on my own in the car (depends how I feel like driving). If I'm driving girlfriend or others then 6th gear.

1st or 2nd, usually 2nd as it will run upto 80mph. Enough to see off the boy racers

cruising has 3rd normaly but 2nd does get used a bit at that speed aswell

if jus cruisin, my auto slips into 4th at 30

otherwise, while accelerating, usually 1st or 2nd depending on mood

So.. 3rd or 4th then....

if am trashing it, then first but usually second.

second hits 62mph - found out recently

3rd at 90

4th at 120

but i hardly trash it though.
