Can some one give me some advise please, I have only just bought an is220d with 34000 on the clock, the car is lovely through out and as yet I have no complaints except the norm, MPG, 6th gear to name only a few but I have noticed that 1st to 2nd gear some time goes in with a thud not all the time but on occasions, I have put it down to trying to pull off at junctions to quick what do you think???

C'mon fellas!!! anyone else get this problem baring in mind this is my first diesel so is just me and my not being use to the car yet!!!

I've just bought an '08 plate IS220D with 62K and I'm getting the same plus a crunch into third gear sometimes. The whole gear linkage seems too loose for my liking! Do you notice a chattering/chriping noise when idling which then goes away when you press the clutch? Try it at night when it's quiet. I am having a new clutch installed next week when I get my Head Gasket problem addressed. Hopefully this will cure it, otherwise it could be the master/slave cylinder, clutch fork or pivot ball, linkage or the gearbox itself :-(

Coming from super reliable, if hard riding Hondas', it's disapointing.

Chuckie let us know pls.

Normally it is the dualmass flywheel, which is nowadays problem with all marques with manual gearboxes. And it is an expensive part!

Sounds like you have your hands full there Chuckie, To be honest I haven't had any of those issuse it was just first to second, I have just put it down to not being use to a diesel, tried it today and just took my time with trhe gear changes and it all seemed ok, good luck with yours though fella, I will keep you informed if I hear anything else though.

Well, had a new Head and Block and the engine still performs as it did before - quite well. The gear linkage has been adjusted and seems more positive, but still have gear problems even after a new clutch. When I went to fetch the car and tried to pull off the clutch made a massive 'thud' and it stalled. I called the Service guy back and he drove it in the usual Lexus/Toyota super slow and deliberate manner (to minimise probability of probs) but it still juddered like hell. He took it to the Tech who reckoned on it needing the 'shine rubbing off' even though it had been test driven. Well, it warmed up and performed ok so we'll see tomorrow when cold. It still thudded into 1st on occasion and crunched into 2nd and very occasionally 3rd. Might be the Dual Mass Flywheel after all, or the Master Cylinder/Slave cylinder. BTW 22yr old Tech told me there was no slave cylinder on these even though the TechDoc shows one (Release cylinder), but he also laughed when I told him ATF was put into the slow 3rd gear synchromesh on my Carina E Exec a dozen years ago - "It's for Autos mate!". "Computer says NO" springs to mind. LOL

Is here a Lexus/Toyota conspiracy to deny there is a problem with DMFs? They just try to fob one off and say that 'clutch drag' and hence gear crunch et al is normal! Persist and communication becomes aggressive and then stops! No wonder their reputation is sliding fast. Any one else found this? Looks like the courts will be seeing this case.

I've driven 60,000 miles in mine and the gears have been fine.
Chuckie888
Good to hear that they're not 'all like that' as I get fobbed off by. Clutch drag and crunching = normal apparantly.
cbr1100xx
change your gearbox oil just had mine changed to valvoline synpower result? much smoother changes with less clunking 50% better when cold.
Matus
how much of oil is needed and where is the drain plug, pls?
cbr1100xx
my local trusted mec does all my servicing think it was 1.8 litre in the gearbox had diff oil changed as well and was under 4 litres for both he said main thing with doing it was all the covers under the car to remove first to get at the drain refill plugs but chages are much better and not so stiff to get into first gear. synpower not cheap tho £14 a litre at eurocarparts!!
unhappyjoe
my box also makes a chattering whining noise they have re built it many times to try and fix it but then now say its normal but its not no way.

Went to a transmission specialist yesterday. They test drove the car and said it is in the early stages of DMF failure. They showed me an old DMF and LUK lietrature about DMF testing etc. Buoyed by this I went to the Lexus garage, but was soon dis-heartened when I was given the well practiced verse after their ridiculous test drive as I'm sure 90 year olds would change gear faster than a Lexus Tech. "It's normal. You must expect a some shunting and crunching. Change gears slower - it's your driving! We don't have DMF problems but the likes of Ford do etc." Basically rather than fixing the problem, Lexus want you to believe the car is cr@p as they are giving up on the diesel and biding their time. When cold, the gears are excellent, but deteriorate when warm. Ah well, I guess it's legals then. Warranty's are all well and good, but when the car companies collude to deny a problem you are on your own as the goverment bodies aren't well organised, giving you circular referals to each other!
Chuckie888
"It's your driving sir" ... I don't think so, it's inherited! But the diesel exarcerbates the problem.

BTW I'm working on a solution. I spent a couple of hours on it at the weekend and it is a lot better. When I get it to work properly I will post, but only to genuine members with problems as I have it in writing from my supplying Toyota dealer that they don't have the expertise to diagnose a Lexus - a car which uses a Toyota gearbox, clutch(OEM) and engine!

Seems to be a standard Manual Box Lexus "problem". I've had two IS200SE's and currently run an IS250 Sport. They all clunk going from 1st to 2nd, and I don't think they have the same box. I've made a point of getting the dealer to change the oil at the 1st service for a multigrade gear oil. This seems to sort it for a few weeks but it always comes back. It's not my heavy handed driving either as I have driven many marques over the years and not had this with anything else. The only quirk in what is probably the best car I have ever owned. Saving up for an IS-F, :tsktsk: manual,8 speed autos rule. :winky:

Why doesn't it clunk all the time if it is a design fault? Maybe you could persuade your Techs to have a closer look next time
Crazy Harry
The manual box is s---e basically, and yes i do have one unfortunatly, although some seem to be OK, most have issues which all the mods from Lexus can't sort, I belive the box is originally from a Toyota van/truck, adapted to be used in the car. it's no longer used, wonder why?
Chuckie888
AISIN AY-6 box and may suffer from the same Release Bearing and Shaft scoring problems as well as too much lateral free play from the DMF. Jence a larger clearance is needed
Desmond
I have the same problem with 1st to 2nd on my 2010 220d but it is never predictable. Changing up slowly seems to work best but that is a pain when you want to get away fast on a roundabout. Very disappointed with the agricultural gearbox and vibro-massage diesel at low revs. I thought it might wear off as it got some miles on but no chance. It means you have to rev up and lose economy. Coming from an Avensis diesel actually feels like a retrograde step. Pity because the 220d is superb in every other way.
