A guy from New Zealand was stung 5 times by a box jellyfish and died. He was sent back and now travels around the world telling his story. He's in the area at the moment - my church managed to get some dates on his tour - so if you're interested in hearing his story and live near Reading or Aldershot then here are the details of the talks he's holding:
Thursday 17th July 7.30pm
Grovelands Christian Centre
553 Oxford Road
Reading
Friday 18th July 7.30pm
Connaught Leisure Centre
Tongham Road (Off Lower Farnham Road)
Aldershot

Did you know....
If you became entangled in the tenticles of a box jellyfish, it would inject you with enough venom to kill 30 men..
It lives solely on tiny shrimp (which don't exaclty need incapacitating) and has no known predators..
Why it is so venomous is a mystery...

Wish I was closer, Javadude.
the only time I get to talk to the living dead, is when I have to go into the office. and then they are only dead from the neck up.
Sorry
Loz
Would have like to come as I miss Church, finding one without long hands would be a miricale though...

EVERY church or likeminded organisation I have found has wanted to dip into my pockets at some point or other. they seem to seek out people that would be good ambasadors for the organisation and then like a mobile phone salesman, start talking about tieing up any income for the foreseeable future.
So indictment on yourself, J'Dude. Don't know you and never met you. just a snippet of my experience. I enjoy bible readings and fellowship like the next guy, but not if its all pretence to facilitate the cosy existence of some would-be spiritual leaders...
Loz
sorry to take this
cosy existence of some would-be spiritual leaders
Yea makes me so mad too. There are some preoccupied with wealth especially in the states but mostly being a church leader means low income and long hours. One of our three elders has income from the church and earns 1/4 what I do.
We don't want people's money. We just want them to come along as they are, think about what they believe and where they stand with G.o.d and hopefully make a commitment to believe in him, repent and accept him as lord of their life.
We do it because he changed our lives for the better and we want other people to experience it too. A bit like "hey I drive a lexus - it's really good to drive, reliable etc - you should get one too."

Wish there were more like you Javadude.
up here (i wont name and shame churches) they seem to be like Amway reps!
"hey, you're great why don't you come meet my friend"
"hey you're great why don't you come to a bible reading?"
"hey, you're great, wanna come back some more?"
"HEy you're great! WHy don't you make a commitment to the church?"
"Hey, you're great, just don't challenge our modern way of doing things!"
"Hey, you're a tight bar steward if you don't give X% of your income to us!"
"Hey, Where are you going?"
all too familiar. not happend to me for a few years though. guess I don;t stop and talk to people like I used to...
Loz (I digress)
Ps. Great analogy with the car!

Why?

There's nothing in the bible about giving up alcohol (although those with an alcohol problem find it helps to go zero).

Phew - just as well - I like the odd beer now and again. It just says not to get drunk. (The buzz from being zapped with the holy spirit is far better anyway.

You can be techincally dead for a period of time and recover, or is this a person who 'claims' (sorry to be skeptical) to be a re-incarnation of the person who died from being stung by a box jellyfish ?

Reckon this bloke who survived has been pretty fortunate and has seen his reason for being as that of an apostle. Cant fault him for that.

erm... well I guess he survived.. if you look at rhaines post he outlines the probable situation..

well there's more religous discussion on this thread than there is about the box jelly fish and i was only replying to your reply to my previous post.
it is also clear that the tour will be for religous and financial benefit not to talk about jellyfish
if you'd like to help

I am not anti-religion or anti-religous beliefs (two very different things) but like to believe I have the right as everyone else to go about my life without being questioned about them.
I am very strongly against religions asking for money, followers of any religion can donate if they so require they shouldn't need to be asked, by asking on a public car related forum I think is totally out of order, I am sorry if this feeling annoys people but I can assure you due to my beliefs I am also annoyed....
Valid thoughts on this thread... maybe....
Valid reason for asking for money on this thread.... definately not...

Well I confess to being pretty anti religion. I agree with many of the 'teachings' but I just personally believe that most churchs/religions are corrupt and rewrite stuff to 'keep the surfs down' or for financial profit. Plus it is pretty hard to think of many wars that don't boil down to religion..... people can have debates, but when it involves *** stuff - it always gets heated.
But - this is 'general chat' so my views don't come into this....... his asking for donations is no different to my asking last year for people to support the Macmillan fund raising we were doing bu buying raffle tickets at JAE. Those who wished to support the Macmillan nurses and their work with Cancer victims came and bought tickets or made donations..... those that didn't stayed well away!
I have no problem with him asking. I'll stick to my anti-cancer stuff though!
It is a very tough line though and a difficult job for the admin to decide ..... what is legitimate, fair 'general chat' etc - what is going over the line? What for example if someone was fund raising for the IRA? Lets face it - many see them as freedom fighters not terrorists, so they would see it as legitimate........
Anyway ... box jellyfish - are they more dangerous as they are peed off after being stuffed in a box then??????

I tried to be very careful on this thread, since when it comes to religon people generally have very strong beliefs (inlcuding anti-religon)..
Me, I try and be very open minded, I have no specific beliefs or bias, do I believe in g.o.d?... I really don't know...
I do believe that churches should be non-profit organisations, and I feel very strongly that evangelists (mainly US TV ones) do not present a good image of religon...
I do however know.. this man was very lucky to survive being stung by a Box jellyfish, and if this experience has given him faith which he wants to share.. good luck to him..
Personally... I think I'll wait for my own epiffany... rather than deciding on someone elses.

Any invitation to support his ministry is intended for Christians. Ian McCormack's talk is free. There will be an offering during the talk but that's intended for Christians who are there.
Churches are like anything else that offers a product or service. If you want to be a part of it then you need to recognise that someone has to pay the rent and the minister's salary.
If you're not a Christian and you're just going along to see what its all about or even if you are a very new Christian then supporting the church is not something we want you to be bothered about. (BTW Just by being christened or occasionally going to church doesn't make you a Christian so that lets you off the hook.) It's for established Christians who have devoted their life to G.o.d and want others to find out about the same life improving choice to follow him. Its a bit like the Gold members who support the Lexus Owners Club.
BTW I announced the offering yesterday at church and as we had lots of visitors along for (adult) baptisms I made a point of saying that if your not a christian then don't worry about it.
lexussport - nice to have you still around!

To avoid people blaspheming by taking his name in vain and possibly offending someone (in addition to G.o.d himself!). There is a dictionary of words which are automatically censored.
