aaround the front of the car i have sticky black hard tar and is impossible. how could i remove it without damaging the paintwork.

Isopropyl alcohol. It doesn't damage the paintwork but it's worth giving it a good coat of wax after you've done it as it will break the exisiting down.
It's not that strong so you'll need plenty on the cloth and give it a good rub. It leaves a white mark so give it a wipe with a dry cloth when you're finished before it dries fully.

iso alcohol does work well - carefull not to splash it everywhere! but the best i have found to remove tar and bugs is turtle wax bug and tar remover - black bottle with horrid lime green sticker on it!
spray it on, leave for 10 mins, wipe off - its that easy!

Petrol is by far the best and cheapest way to remove tar. you can also use standard thinners but be very careful !!
