I've identified an intermittent starter motor problem with my MK1 GS, and need to remove it at some stage to get it refurbed.
Anybody out there had a go at this who can give me some tips. I've had a brief shufty and it looks like some gaenacological skills would come in handy to get anywhere near it.

I've known a guy for years who is in the starter/alternator game and he has fixed anything I've ever chucked at him for mere beer voucher money.

Any help appreciated,

cheers,
Steve J

You will need...in no particular order... Something to raise the vehicle up in the air which is usually named after one half of the pair who unsuccessfuly tried to fetch a pail of water from the top of the hill. *** knows why it took two of Them. If he had been a real man, he would of sent her on her own for the water and would have been here today. But then again, children [and adults] would be devoid of the wonderful tale of the hapless couples quest for the all important pail of water. offtopic.gif

Sorry, don't know what came over me then...
I removed my starter. You need.... lots of swear words, ..liquid refreshment ... more swear words.... something to bang your head on..... more swear words..... a damn good set of wobbly socket extension bars .... a promise from the neighbours that they wont call for the men in white coats after they show concern for your meaningless loud ramblings..... And lots of encouragement.

Steve. Mine was nothing more than a loose engine earth strap. The engine had been out of mine to straighten the chassis and I assumed that that was reason for the bad connection.
Got to be worth a check before your neighbours have you sectioned laugh.gif

Cheers Paul,
I will try to have a look over the weekend and 'survey' the task from underneath.

I'll check the earth strap while under there, and might be able to fix it there & then.

I need to square off with my auto-sparky mate when I can drop it off before I actually remove it. I've been tapping the solenoid with a hammer, which seems to cure it when the problem arises (usually from/in cold) but as you say, I might be moving the earth strap whilst doing this.

'Spose I could get Jill to do it...............................
