  1. I think this one is worth the money .......https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-LEXUS-LS400-ONLY-43-788-MILES-FROM-NEW/232529455743?hash=item3623d5ea7f:g:JVIAAOSw43hZ6Mgz&utm_source=LexusOwnersClubUK&utm_medium=ForumLinks in my view.....thousands of people buy a new "average" car and lose the same money in depreciation in 1 or 2 years....if I did not have the dogs it would be mine.
  2. SH20....." Not ever experienced a 400 or 430 which seem to have legendary reputations "....I would have most likely felt the same......if I had not driven the 400 for so many miles. And those repairs sound scary at so little mileage.....but best of luck with your future miles in it....keep us posted.
  3. Sorry to all the 460 owners on here ho have had good experiences....but this is my Story.....and nothing has changed....I am looking for another 400 mk3...... Apologies also to those who remember reading this before. I had my 400 MK3 for 6 years and it had 120,000 on when I bought it....I did another 90,000 of the happiest motoring I had ever experienced in 30 odd years of driving... The main reason I ended up going for a 460 was a bit of rust on the 400....around the arches and the windscreen....I panicked a bit over nothing....if I had the chance again....and know what I know now...I would have spent as much as it cost treat the 400 to a full Top Notch respray....and still own the best car I have ever owned. Fact is..... a friend of mine has always admired the car....and when I was set on a 460 I gave it to him as a gift. the 460...was a one owner car with 9,000 miles on....I did not even test drive it....went on the train from Cumberland to Turriff....near Aberdeen....and drove it back through the night... I knew in the first mile I had made a mistake....but I thought wait a minute....this is a 460...ten years younger than my old 400....with only 9000 miles on....it MUST be Me. We set off for Venice a few days later....drove there non stop...took 26 hours from Cumberland....and every mile was full of thoughts of what a pleasure this would be in the old 400....and what a poor experience it was in this 460....BUT I still ...over the next year or so....tried to convince myself I was mistaken. What I didnt like about the 460 : Brakes are almost impossible to judge....like you have no real connection to them....terrible. Steering was a mystery....some days it was OK ish...other days it had a a mind of its own....over one bridge I regularly crossed ...it would dart around as if the Mysterons were driving it ! The steering also felt like an old car with worn out Track Control arms ....worn ball joints etc....wandered around over road irregularities....awful sensation through the steering wheel. Cruise control was so bad I gave up using it...and oh boy did I try to master it....but it mastered ME in the end....far too complicated for its own good.....slightest bit of dirt on the Radar in the badge and it would tell you on the dash that it was not available to use anyway.....is someone washed their windscreen if front of you it would say Not Available to use. When washing the windscreen with a hose.....water would pour out of the side winkers on the wings...Lexus Carlisle said it was normal. ? Wind noise around mirrors.....better if you put the window DOWN a few mm ?.... I did the JMc Raney fix that is on the Net.....and took a Caulking gun to the mirror mounting plates......I remember thinking....what am I doing....this car was nearly £70.000 New......it didn't really help...but tried to "believe" it did.....for my own peace of mind. Tyre noise is a given....and was expected with the quite frankly "Stupid" on a car like this ....low profiles rubber.... Engine lacked low down torque....needed to get it revving to make progress...again....in a car like this...Stupid IMO. Far too many gears....always hunting around... And Mark Levinson my arse....the 400 Stereo was better too. But I remember there was someone on here who was a disappointed as me....and it was a relief....I thought I had imagined the whole thing. Things I didn't like about the 400 MK3.....can't open the boot with the engine running.....that was annoying....but that's IT. Again..... just my opinion.....but that 400... is one of.....if not The Best Car ever made.....and to think you can waft around in one... for less than the price of one years depreciation on any new car on the market....well....quite frankly.....if you don't have one....your Crackers..... err...hang on....I have not got one right now.....excuse ?...need a Jeep for the muddy Hounds to jump in the back of. At this point I must again apologise to anyone who is enjoying their 460....I am not here to upset anyone... Things I liked on the 460....the looks....it is a Great looking car....with a great looking interior.....and the rear view camera was a Godsend. Sorry for long post lads....but hey lads......who else would listen ? ?
  4. My friend has a 430 that he has repaired the rear Air pipe work on....all is well with them....but was told it it wont work until it is Re Set somehow at a Lexus Dealer. Anyone on here have any ideas.....? Thanks again lads.
  5. Thanks for reply Steve.... would the clearances not close up ?.....and therefore the engine would be very quiet......but be getting less valve lift....= less performance and eventually burned out valves . I have experience with Bucket and shim.....they are very time consuming to do....but do wear very slowly.... because of all the surface area as the cam sweeps the bucket or shim... but will eventually need done .....my friends 400 has done 330.000 miles and never been done....which is incredible really. I just wondered if anyone has even had their valve clearances physically checked ?....with a feeler gauge. I know some mechanics just compression test a cylinder....and if it is in spec....they just presume valves are fully shut.. Anyway....it is another testament to the incredible engineering of that Wonderful Engine .
  6. That is a nice looking car Denis .....I had seen it and saved it....and love the Black interior....but I will keep looking....it is out there somewhere.....Thanks pal.
  7. Hi Mark......no...I want another MK3....I prefer the look at the front.....headlights mostly... and the simpler engine with less gears in the box too.....sorry....but I also know my way around the older model maintenance wise. I have trawled the net and found a couple.....but hanging out for Black Leather .....but we'll see....I don't like the Caramac Bar Dashboards.......sorry.
  8. Hello lads...the Aerial ?......the car had an old style phone in the armrest....I took it it as for that back in the day.. Looking for a very nice MK3... with Black Leather if poss.....Aspen Green.....or basically....Can I please have my old car back !..... Black Leather is very rare it seems. Oh....and the DHP wheels too . Err....and an unused Toolkit with the torch and battery still in cellophane please lads. Are the D8Zs still available ?
  9. A short story......some on here will have heard some of it....if so I apologise. I joined this site back in 2005 I think it was....I had just bought a 120.000 mile LS400 Mk3. I did another 84.000 miles of the BEST motoring in my 35 years of driving.....That Car was simply Amazing.... I did all my own maintainance on that car and it was a pleasure to work on too.....so well put together....that it also comes apart beautifully too. Anyway....I was a bit worried that it really needed a full Respray as it was getting some rust around the arches and windscreen....though long and hard about the cost.... and made the decision to buy a nearly new LS460....and I gave my friend the 400 as he needed a car at the time. I tried so very hard for approx 18 months to Love that 460....and I have said on here before as to how disappointed I was with it....I was just not enjoying it at all. So I went and traded it for a 1 year old Touareg V8 Diesel...... the VW was a nightmare.....great to drive but at the dealers over and over with problems....mostly electrical causing Limp Mode..... So sold that ....as I just could not trust it to get me anywhere....I was using my wife's MX5 to make sure I got to appointments...even the RAC men were getting sick of it. Well....here I am where I started....with lots of lessons learned... and thousands poorer to learn those lessons....looking again for the Best Car in the World. I have been a Fool...and when I find a good one....I will keep it for as long as I can keep it running....and if it needs a 5 grand paint job...it will get it ....Believe Me !.
  10. Just wondering if anyone on here has heard of....or ever had the Valve Clearances checked or adjusted ?..... I had a MK3 with 204.000 on ...and never had the shims changed to my knowledge.... someone once said they were Hydraulic....but I read otherwise. Thanks again Lads.
  11. Thanks Mark....I had checked the history....and it was worrying to say the least....but I live in hope. And Dale....forgot to say....please enjoy your 460 .... apologies for my ramblings..... on your post.
  12. Sorry for twittering on about this 460 lads....but I was so so suprised and dissapointed with this car......but no....no accidents..., ten thousand miles ....one owner....all Lexus dealer history.....I bought 5 new tyres almost immedietly .... the same as fitted standard to the 600H....thought they must be the best and quietest perhaps for the Hybrid ?... Bridgestone Turanza's .....and still the steering was very vague indeed. The cruise control was wonderful on the 400....used it all the time...but the 460 used radar scanning and would brake up the car for you in various situations...very disconcerting. I sold the 460 after a year or so ... and bought a fantastic car to drive that I could jump my two Hounds into the back....a 2013 VW Touareg V8 Diesel.....5 thousand miles. but that was the most unreliable car I have ever owned. I look for my old car every day on ebay.....P939 UHR. Anyway....I will say no more....I do sincerely hope all the 460 lads on here are enjoying their cars....it was simply not the car I hoped for.
  13. Mr Tulpen.....I paid all that money and didnt think for one moment I would fault a Lexus LS some Ten years younger......and with 195.000 less miles on the clock than my 400. Just shows how wrong you can be I suppose. I was starting to think it was just me until another member on here said he had the same experience. Glad you are enjoying yours....but after 30 plus years of driving I know what feels right.....and that car "felt " terrible to drive. But for looks....they are one good looking car.....and no mistake.

  15. I just bit the bullet and fitted new Lexis cats and y piece....wasnt too bad a price....also fitted new manifold studs and nuts. Will be interested to see what happens with the hub bearing....I was told you need a new complete hub from Lexus.
