    Hi Gus, The Mercedes is still running like a star, only thing is that I have tuned it some, new chip and more kompressor psi = 230 hp. Too bad Lexus never produced the IS430. BMW has the M3, Mercedes is coming out with a C-class AMG C 55 soon with a 5.5 liter V8 that produces 370 hp. The IS chassi should be able to cope with a bigger engine. Does Lexus not believe in its products, I think they are too modest.

Lexus Introduces Third-Generation GS Luxury Sports Sedan Reveals New Design Direction for Company January 6, 2004 - Detroit, MI - Lexus introduced the new GS luxury sport sedan today at a press conference at the North American International Auto Show. The all-new, more powerful GS utilizes the latest in advanced technology to improve both performance and handling and is the first in a new wave of Lexus products to reflect a new, more passionate direction in styling. "From a technology standpoint, the GS employs a sophisticated array of advanced safety, comfort and convenience features that will cause even the most enthusiastic driver to take notice," said Denny Clements, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "From a design standpoint, the new GS will be the first vehicle in our lineup to benefit from a new, more passionate direction in styling." First All-Wheel Drive Model Significantly, the new GS will feature all-wheel-drive, the first such application in any Lexus car, and offer the performance enhancements and advanced vehicle control of the Lexus Vehicle Dynamic Management (VDM) system. Monitoring a variety of sensors, the system is capable of anticipating the onset of a vehicle skid or slide and then helps correct the situation with a combination of braking and throttle control. The new VDM system is less obtrusive than conventional VSC but ultimately more effective. Performance Optimized Joining the potent and refined 4.3-liter V8 will be an all-new 245-horsepower V6 engine replacing the current inline six. Both the powerful V6 and V8 engines benefit from an all-new close-ratio 6-speed automatic transmission with a sequential manual-shifting mode. The combination provides faster and substantially smoother acceleration for even better performance and, surprisingly, improved fuel economy. A new Adaptive Variable Suspension allows the driver to fine-tune suspension damping with four settings ranging from normal-mode for everyday driving to a sport-mode for a tighter, more precise feel. New Lexus Design Direction From an architectural standpoint, the GS marks a move towards a more sculptural direction... that is artistic, dynamic, simple... yet intriguing. A two-inch longer wheelbase and short overhangs on the new GS creates a wide, powerful stance. A long hood, pulled-back cabin and slingshot windows recall classic sports car proportions and the vertical grille surrounded by four independent headlamps connects the new GS with the outgoing model, but with a futuristic look. The front also features an aggressive lower valence with integrated fog lamps. Dynamic 18-inch wheels on the V8 model help tie the muscular yet elegant look together. The creation of a unique spatial feeling in the passenger compartment is central to the new Lexus design direction. The interior of the new GS has a precision, luxury feel with ultra-premium wood, polished metal and leather accents. Everything inside the GS is designed and styled to create a haven for peaceful comfort and relaxation, from contoured and supportive front seats with optional climate control to the standard 10-speaker audio system with simple steering wheel controls. New Intelligent Luxury Sport Sedan In addition to a new look and feel, the new GS also improves upon the increasingly complex nature of automotive technology. The GS offers numerous standard features, such as a keyless SmartAccess that allows the driver to lock, unlock and start the car simply by touching the door handle (with a key fob in pocket) and then simply pressing a push-button to start. An advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPM) can detect and notify the driver, via an indicator warning light, of a significant loss in pressure in one or more tires, a condition that could potentially lead to premature tire wear and loss of control. The GS will also feature the Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), which helps illuminate a turn or curve as the driver steers into it. A rear back-up camera is also added for 2006, providing an extra margin of confidence when reversing the vehicle. Available in conjunction with the optional navigation system, it automatically projects an image of what the camera lens can detect behind the vehicle onto the navigation screen when the vehicle is in the reverse gear. "With the new GS we took all that was good in terms of technology and found ways to make it more intuitive, more intelligent and more relevant to the needs of its driver," said Clements. Advanced Safety Features The GS will also offer an optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) that can help reduce collision injury and damage. The system uses a millimeter-wave radar sensor to detect obstacles in front of the car and a pre-collision system computer with vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate inputs that help to determine in advance whether a collision is unavoidable. The system then preemptively retracts front seat belts and prepares Brake Assist for increased braking force to help reduce collision speed. In addition, the new GS gains new knee airbags for the driver and front passenger as well as front and rear side curtain airbags as standard equipment. The Supplemental Restraint System in the new GS also includes variable-force front airbags for both driver and front passenger. Sensors determine the severity of the accident and in turn the force with which to deploy the front airbags, helping to provide the appropriate level of occupant restraint.   4. Funny I was never able to get better than 10,5 -11 sec (o-62 mph) with my manual IS200 even after if loosened up after 2,5 years. I had a stop watch and revved to about 6000 rpm before shifting as fast as I could. I was not near the official figure. All conditions were perfect. No load, good tyres, good road quality. Attempt after attempt never got me below 10 sec. :(

    I saw the figures where it says 0-60, 7.3 sec (US site) and 0-62 in 8,2 sec (UK site) for the IS300 E-shift. Trouble is it does not sound credible that going that extra 2 mpg (3,2 km/h) would take nearly 1 second extra ! More like 0,3 sec extra would seem credible. Wonder how they produced those figures ?

    From www.lexus.com , www.lexus.co.uk (official figures): Lexus IS200 - 6 speed: Acceleration: 0-62 mph, 9,5 sec Top speed: 134 mph (214,4 km/h) Curb weight: 1455 kg Lexus IS200- compressor-6 speed: Acceleration: 0-62 mph, 7,3 sec (TTE official) Top speed: 140,6 mph (225 km/h) - rev limited Curb weight: 1455 kg + weight of compressor system IS300- E shift: Accecleration: 0-60 mph, 7.3 sec Top speed: 143.7 mph (229 km/h) Curb weight: 1500-1580 kg IS300- 5 speed: 0-60 mph, 6.8 sec Top speed: 143.7 mph Curb weight: 1477 kg Conclusions: 1. The IS200 compressor will be beaten in acceleration and top speed by the IS300 - 5 speed as the curb weight will be very similar but the IS300 engine is more powerful than that of the IS200 compressor. 2. The IS300, regardless of gearbox ,will beat the IS200 / IS200 compressor in top speed due to gear ratios. 3. You are right the IS300 - E shift does weigh 100 - 150 kg more than the IS200 compressor. That approximates to 15 - 20 bhp if they had the same weight as 300 kg corresponds to 50 bhp according to physical motion theory. So if they weighed in equal this would mean 220-225 bhp for the compressor and 215 bhp for the IS300 (very marginal) difference. Plus the IS300 E shift has to channel it's power through a auto gearbox which means a greater loss of power due to greater internal inertia. The IS300 - 5 speed is not handicaped by this. So it will be close, in the end it will depend how well you can handle the stick, clutch and accelerator in the IS200 compressor if you will beat the IS300 automatic. On small slip and the IS300 will come out ahead (like jdmparts guru says). It is time for a match up lads ! Who is up for it ? Lets step outside and settle it.

    I feel the IS300 would be quicker than the kompressor IS200 due to its stronger engine and same weight (the IS300 engine is bigger but is all aluminum). IS200 kompressor: 205 bhp, 245 Nm. IS300: 215 bhp, 288 Nm. The auto gearbox will handicap the IS300 some though. Is there any official test comparison? One should put a kompressor IS200 next to an IS300 and do a dragster run. It would be a close call. The US verion 5 speed manual IS300 would best the kompressor IS200 though. In top speed it is for sure as the IS300 is geared for a top speed of 245 km /h and the IS for 235 km /h where the IS200 tops out.
  11. I don't know how many that have IS200 here at the forum, who have had a chance to drive big brother, the IS300 ? If you haven't yet you really should. A friend of mine at work got his car stolen and was offered the IS300 by the insurance company as the legal bits were sorted out. So naturally I had to beg for a drive. Having lived with the IS200 for 3 years so I knew exactly how to compare these two relatives. First of all, climbing in, the full leather trim felt more fitting of this car. I had the alcantara-leather in my IS200 which was not bad either. Of course this view is a personal one. The sports steering wheel felt thicker than in my IS200. I did also have the bi color sports wheel in my 200. I don't know if Lexus beefed it up a bit. This being a 2003 model and IS300 ? The navigation system, something I always lacked in my IS200, was fun and really lends stress-free driving. Also adds to the luxurious aura. Too bad it didn't have a touch screen though. Starting the baby up I immediately notice a deeper note. Of course the extra litre displacement would do that. The engine was cold so the steptronic-automatic gearbox wouldn't go below 3rd gear. No problem to get rolling though. We're talking 215 bhp. Try that in an ordinary IS200 without getting shivers from the engine or revving like crazy. The gas pedal response and feel was alert like in the IS200. It even felt a touch more sensitive, maybe because a quick nudge gives access to an additional 60 bhp over the IS200? The IS300 is also better insulated than my IS200. There was hardly any pavement or other noise from the outside. After about 5 minutes the engine was warmed up. It was late Sunday evening, which meant almost no traffic in this part of town. I gunned it and was sucked forward by the sheer power of the super smooth 3 liter engine. There was much more power here than in the IS200. Really worlds apart. I was flying ! Pressed back in my seat I reached illegal speeds faster than an eyes blink. The IS200 is an excellent car but the IS300 was simply superb. Lucky I don't have one because I would have no trouble losing my driving license. Any other experinces with the IS300 ?
  12. It is with tears in my eyes that I sold my IS200 Sport last week. Never have I owned a more stylish and well handling car. It has given me lots of joy! Bought a Mercedes C-class. Got a really good deal that I couldn't refuse ! Maybe the next generation Lexus IS will be mine some day... 2005 / 2006 ...? It has been lot's of fun to contribute to the forum.     Sorry G7UHF, I don't mean to be thick but I'm not quite following you. So you ordered a second pair of HID (9006) for your high-beam ? And the installation didn't work ? That's strange because it should you would imagine. You could send a personal message to me through the site and explain. PS I got a chance to compare an IS200 original HID (from factory) to mine a while back and the conversion kit makes the original look a lot like halogens. The Philips kit came out more intense and of course more ice-blueish in tone. Does anyone know what color temp the factory HID:s from Lexus use ?? Cheers !

    Aye, Aye, hear, hear... I second that G7UHF ! Good choice in converting ! I am really amazed every time I take the car somewhere at night at how extremely powerful they are. It's almost as the highbeam is superflous. The highbeam only gives some extra light upwards and is mostly totally drowned out by the Xenons near range. I have not had ANY oncoming cars blink at me with their highbeams as when they tell you that you forgot to turn off your highbeam at night. I was a little worried about this, that the sheer intesity of the Xenons would cause irritation. But it appears that they are well aimed. Another interesting thing I read about is that having xenon in a reflector housing as in the IS200 (and GS300) makes it less sharp than if the xenon bulb is fitted in a projector type housing (BMW, LS430, SC430). That means good news for oncomers. The physics behind this would be that the light source is less concentrated. Although not less effective when the beam hits the pavement where the light is refocused. :hocus-pokus: :hocus-pokus:

    Here are some pix of the Xenon HID-kit that I've installed: Here you can see the ballast (that gives the 23,000 Volt initial start-up spark) to ignite the HID bulbs. You can also see the connection to the battery. Here is the right-hand installation. You can also see the relay and safety fuse. Here you can see the difference between the 80 Euro Philips Ultitron 6000K bulb and the 20 Euro Philips Blue Vision bulb. I'll be getting back with some "action" pics soon.
