  1. We found it -and it's a good one to remember. The auto electrician found that the main earth from the battery that bolts to the passenger side firewall was loose. This is the result of some poor smash repair work. Thanks Normski
  2. Yesterday after a 30 minute visit to the dentist my wife came out to the car and it was totally dead- no lights, no key light, no map lights - nothing. Battery is less than 12 months old- and the roadside tech tested it as OK (12.84V). Had to have it towed to an auto electrician -who is not inspiring me with confidence. I'm in Australia and the nearest dealer is 90K away. What we did also check is there is power at the fusebox which is right next to the battery- and all the fuses appear to be ok. Its like there is no connection from here to the rest of the car. I'm hoping like hell its not the ECU but because even the map lights don't work I suspect its simpler. Any suggestions welcome (And yes I tried a jump start) Tony
  3. So am I the first to replace a battery? Its getting worse so I just ordered one
  4. Just wondering if anyone knows the average life of the battery on the is250. Mines done 120K and is 5 years old. I know the battery is a panasonic with a reputation for lasting. However it went flat the other day and despite a long run is struggling to crank when left overnight. When the battery went flat the mechanic checked and the battery was charging. I'm thinking its due for replacement. Comments? TIA Tony
  5. OK no leaks. Got the car back and realised from the invoice that they have rebuilt the existing transmission. They had it out and replaced the shift solenoids and cleaned the valve body. Still not happy but it is running fine for now. They are now giving me a 2 year extended warranty on the transmission. OK but now the car is making the noise on starting that got fixed at 40K I've had enough. The car has more rattles than should occur at this age- caliper slides (again) mainly. Front brakes need new discs(again). I had a subaru before this for five years that had none of these issues. I'll be selling- soon and I won't be back for a lexus
  6. I wrote in the main forum of a problem I had with the auto transmission not changing up when cold. It also stalled in reverse. It went back twice and each time they changed the fluid and filter - on a transmission that is supposedly a sealed unit. Its just come back again after being promised a new transmission. This hasn't happened. Instead they've repaired the existing unit again. According to the warranty invoice they've "removed transmission and replaced shift solenoids and filter. Cleaned valve body, Roadtested Vehicle,OK" I'm concerned that whatever keeps blocking the filter still has not been addressed. I'm guessing that band material has shed and that this is the culprit. However I'm not a mechanic and only have a rudimentary understanding of how these things work. I'd really appreciate some input here TIA Tony
  7. Yep- Lexus have agreed to replace the transmission. Had to push as they just wanted to give me "assurances" but its now booked in next week for 2 weeks to have it done
  8. The problem is back. The car is with the local Lexus dealer and they are asking Lexus Australia for a new transmission. At the time of this post we are waiting for a response. The car is now just over 100K. Apparently the transmission is a sealed unit- ie- the fluid is supposed to last a lifetime. They've just had to flush it again and replace the filter. The dealer agrees this is not right which is why they've asked for a replacement unit So lets hope this is a one off. But for those of you approaching 100K check your transmission gear changing when cold. Any hesitation get it looked at pronto
  9. I've cross posted this in the australian forum but as this is the most active it may be of use to someone here The auto transmission was not changing gears when stone cold in the morning- but the paddles worked. Because the engine is so quiet at first we thought it was sluggish and engine related. It was only when I had the window down one morning I heard the engine revving higher than normal(yeh I know I should watch the Tacho) I'm In Australia.I've recently moved from Lexus Newcastle to Lexus Chatswood for service. Newcastle were told but didn't fix it as part of that mind numbingly expensive service. Chatswood did- the transmission filter was partly blocked so that when cold it was struggling to build up enough pressure to change gears. Apparently this has happened in the US. Hope it helps someone
  10. I'm in australia and information is thin on the ground here. I have just been scalped for approx 800 pounds ($1673AUD) for a 90K service by Lexus of Newcastle(australia). I won't go into the lousy service where the service manager has a poor attitude but what I am trying to find out is what is the scheduled time for this service? They had the car for 6 hours, did the rack replacement and the brake recall plus 90K service according to them. Did they have enough time? TIA Tony
  11. Its the GEARBOX...not the engine, had the same thing...now cured Nope mines an auto- and it was the idler pulley as the bulletin describes
  12. Just thought I would list the history I've had for 86K and three years use. I'm not complaining but if I was buying one brand new for the first time I'd like to see a post like this. I have the base model - no MM or sat nav and having driven one with don't miss it. 1. Drivers footrest broken - being replaced under warranty 2. Passenger front door bottom seal on door entrance has come loose 3. Engine knock on start as per the tech doc- fixed 18 months ago 4. Engine splutters on cold start - almost like carby engines of old- yet to be addressed 5. Rattle from front brake calliper slides fixed once but back 6. replaced front discs at 47K - used Toyota Kluger discs as same but heaps cheaper 7. 3rd set of tyres last changed at 80K. Running top of the line Toyos as better grip than original Bridgestones in the wet 8. Rattle in sunroof - loose cable- fixed 2 years ago 9. Both batteries in remotes just replaced 10. Horrible stink from A/C when new - fixed after 3 attempts 11. 3rd set of brake pads just fitted Fuel economy has been pretty consistent at about 8.5 litres per 100K mixed freeway and local use I'm overall happy with the car. The service has been good but I have had to be persistent. Most of the issues listed are fair wear and tear and the average service bill about $300 AUD - major services $600 minor $200 Very few rattles apart from the caliper slides. Good solid car but I'll never buy black again! Every dent shows as the stupid ****ers used a white primer. Still great to drive, handles very well and the auto 6 speed is pretty good with the odd clunk at low speeds I hope this helps someone make a decision. Value for money is excellent
  13. Hi swager and others. The dealer has finally managed to hear the rattle and has agreed to the work. The car is going in tomorrow and they have asked to keep it 2 days. No I have not had excessive oil use and have only had to top it up once when the noise first appeared. It was not that low and only needed half a litre. The fault is now listed with Lexus Australia so any one else from Oz should be able to have it addressed now. regarding the seat I sent them the bulletin about the seat clips but they swear it is inside the seat. So they are replacing the whole unit The only issue I have had is squeaky brakes - and that may be my fault as I had an outside garage fit Kluger Discs as they were supposedly identical and much cheaper. But I'm wondering if the material they are made out of is different
  14. I've just sent my IS250 back to the dealer for the second time for a rattle on cold start that is intermittent. There's a service bulletin in the US that describes it - EG017-07 Engine - Brief Knock/Rattle On Cold Start Up. However being in Australia I am having a hard time convincing the dealer to do the rectification as of course it has not done it for them! I have sent them the bulletin after subscribing to ALLDATA for it but I think they are shying away from the big job that it is. It involves changing a pulley on the timing belt. I'm getting really p***ed off at the dealers attitude as they have only just agreed to replace the drivers seat on my third complaint(the usual squeaky seat so well known on this forum). Now it looks like I have another fight on my hands to get this addressed. The car is relatively high mileage for its age- 60k at just over 2 years old. It does a lot of motorway work. My question is- is there a way of forcing them to do the job? It is known as intermittent so they may not hear it. But the fault is known and covered by warranty so why not just do it?
