  1. Hi Ben ,I will be interested on your findings on the Kuhmo tyres on the Lexus .Are you fitting the Ecsta KU39 or the new PS91 ? I have fitted KU39 on MX5 cars over the last few years and found them to be excellent , I can't find much information on the new PS91 as it has only been available for a few months Dave
  2. Hi ,yes ,the oil filter is not the most accessible ,but there are worse !! .I found the easiest way in the confined space is to use the original lexus filter and buy a 14 sided fluted 3/8 drive metal removal tool cheaply on E bay ,put that on your socket and you can just reach up and fit it over the end .Ensure you measure the dia and number of flutes on the filter to get the right tool then always buy the same type filter next time .All filters are not the same so if you swap makes your back to square 1 .I'm afraid you will also find removing the gearbox level and drain plugs are also a pain in the bum on this car Dave
  3. Hi as discussed you pay your money and take your choice .Your Halfords service will only be as good as the guy who carries it out ,if you insist on keeping a lexus dealer stamp then you will have to pay the dealer prices ,the IS 250 is quite straight forward mechanically and my advice would be to find a local independent garage run by the owner who gets his hands dirty and listens to what you want ,most of the check list is inspect items so a 30,000 service boils down to Change oil and filter; inspect/replace air filter ;inspect /replace pollen filter .All other items should be inspected and checked as a competent mechanic works his way round the vehicle .I would also check and grease the calliper slider pins front and rear ( not on the Lexus schedule) but they will seize if left .This will save you a lot of money on the service ,start a folder and save all receipts for future proof on resale .I am not impressed by the service from most main dealers whatever the make and do all my own servicing and have done so for the last 50 years .I have never had any problem selling a car with a full folder of receipts and MOT certs Dave
  4. Hi ,as john has posted ,mainly due to rubbish tyres ,I have been driving rear wheel drive cars for the last 17 years and in my experience you do not want cheap tyres in the winter ;I have bought a few MX5 ,s with Chinese tyres on and a light car like that will soon show you the error of your ways , So called summer tyres do not operate very well below 7 degrees so I would suggest a quality tyre .I have personally used Dunlop ;uniroyal rainsport ; vredestein and goodyear on lexus cars without problems in damp weather. If you are doing a lot of winter driving the new Michelin cross climate get very good reports ,and it saves having 2 sets of tyres . Dave
  5. Hi; if you look on the website for afcparts.co.uk ,there are upper and lower pins listed at £5.49 ea Dave
  6. Good post as stated ,it costs a lot of money to run any car and in my opinion it is worth a little more to run something good. You have had good value in covering 42000 miles .I think the lexus is rarer because some people do not realise how reliable they are ,and because of the high garage labour cost they are frightened off by the worry of repair bills ,this also affects the rate of depreciation ,which I think is slightly greater with lexus ; Good news for the 2 nd hand buyer .I am on my second now and would have no hesitation in buying another . Dave
  7. Good luck with your new choice ,my son is a big Volvo fan ,I look after his and I did consider one when I wanted a hard top convertible .Sanity prevailed ,and I purchased a Lexus IS 250 Convertible ;no regrets ,great car ,just need more sunshine! Dave
  8. Hi I don,t understand ' bad experience ' I have 2 cars insured with different companies ( works out cheaper for me than multi car as I am the only driver .) I phone round to keep on top of silly renewal quotes and the only downside I have is I get a lot of E mails and phone calls on the next anniversary of the policies as they now have my contact details ,although this can work out in my favour for comparing quotes .If you are worried about details you could ask your existing insurer as you only want a guide , I would do this when considering changing a car . Dave
  9. Hi Stephen your car looks really great ,same colour as my is 250 so I,m biased I think you will get a much easier ride ,especially over the potholes !! .Just as a matter of interest what have you done about the TPMS system ?
  10. Hi ,tyre choice is always a hotly debated issue , so you will get conflicting advice ,one thing I can say is unheard of cheap Chinese tyres ( known as ditchfinders ) are not to be recommended on rear wheel drive cars such as your Lexus .I am surprised you have kept them on for so long .I have bought cars in the past from dealers who fitted tyres with the only criteria being they must be black and round and frightened myself in no time, taken them off and thrown them away . My advice is to keep to a recognized brand ,there are some excellent mid range tyres if you are on a budget , do your homework ,there is plenty of advice on here ,I,m sure changing these will improve the handling on your car . Dave
  11. Hi Wayne ,I know its frustrating ,but I Think selling it off is a bit drastic . Some of the hire firms list a portable impact wrench which would cost approx. £25 to hire ,check out if there is one close ,you would only need it for 1 day ,soak the nut in Plus gas releasing fluid first and use an impact socket .you could also buy one ! Clarke list a mains CEW 1000 at £71 this should shift nuts with a rating of 450 N m ,and gets very good reports .good luck Dave
  12. Hi and welcome ; a shame your 1st post is with a problem . The bolt securing the pulley is torqued up very tightly; as steve says a puller will remove it ,but I suspect as you say it just spins you are trying to release the nut . If this is the case you can try putting the car in gear ,have someone sit in with the brakes applied and use a long bar extension on the socket ( a piece of bar or tube to slip over ) do not use the ratchet and make sure the socket does not slip .Most professionals use a air powered hammer gun like the ones used by tyre fitters to remove wheels .battery versions are available ,and if you can gain acess to one of these it will make life much easier . I have removed these pulleys in the past and it will be TIGHT. Dave
  13. Hi , as johnatg says , stating a cover stops things being seen and checked is just a comment ,In my opinion it is there as a get out clause should any problem arise within a short time of the MOT and you appeal that it was part of the test ,the tester can fall back on this statement because he could not check it . I have not had it on the Lexus but I have with other cars ,also where plastic covers are originally fitted over sills and they say they cant check for corrosion. Cynical ? me Dave
  14. Like that Bluesman ! my other car is a MX5 and most drivers tend to wave ,especially the early Mk 1 owners . Not had it happen with the Lexus ,but I have had people stop and ask questions when I was parked with the hood down Dave
  15. Hi ,yes I think the M L has a different system ;my sat nav is in the hard drive and I don,t think it can be updated with a disc .A full post code can be added on the 2nd page of the first screen ,took me a while to find there was a 2nd page ,there is a button in the top right corner .I used the system on a 4 week tour of France in September without any problem ,although it is not the best I find it practical . Dave
  16. Hi ,I am sure you will not have any problems with the oil ,the only problem I see is 5 litres is not enough oil for your proposed oil and filter change ; I found I needed a little over 6 litres Dave
  17. Hi I too had the old green licence until recently ;a couple of years ago I hired a van to help my daughter move house ,when I got to the garage and produced my licence the young lad in the office said he had never seen anything like it and it was not a licence !!!! . I wasted nearly 2 hours of valuable time waiting while his boss got out of bed and came to inspect it . It was not one of the major car rental groups ,just a small garage round the corner . Nostalga ,its not what it used to be Dave
  18. Hi good choice ,very nice car to travel in ,and goes better than you would think ;my son has a 2004 , I look after ,bought at 17000 miles now on 130 000 runs like a watch regularly serviced ,oil changed every 6000 miles ,only problems , exhaust corrosion and a couple of seized callipers ;sound familiar to is 250 owners ? should serve you well Dave
  19. Hi ,sorry you have had such a bad start to Lexus ownership .The IS200 is a very reliable car normally ,and I am not going to guess what your problems may be . All I would ask is did you buy this car from a dealer ? if so it is his responsibility to sort this for you as the leak must have been evident at the time of sale ;you have had the car for such a short time it is covered by his guarantee as a trader .You must give him the opportunity to rectify the fault . Let us know how you get on . Dave
  20. Hi ,that is a really good price for blueprint parts , good choice in my book , I had them fitted to my previous Sportcross for many thousands of miles . Dave
  21. Hi ,you will need to have the fault code or codes read by someone with a reader before you can progress any further ,guessing is not a viable option. A dealer will usually charge in the region of £50 for this or you can buy a reader off E bay for less and then you will be able to check in future. If you post up the code numbers on here ,you will get help with the diagnosis Dave
  22. Hi ,as above blueprint are good, I have also used Brembo from ECP ,recently fitted a set to the front ,can,t detect any difference from originals ;They regularly have discount codes so you can buy for a good price . Dave
  23. Hi ,Verbout ,I can assure you I don,t chant mantras on a technical question , I am a trained engineer ,time served in the aircraft industry and having worked many years in the automotive industry ; we were taught by the suppliers of some of these compounds ;- antiseize grease is NOT a lubricant ,it is designed to dry out and leave a base which will not allow parts to bind together , eg threaded fasteners ,close fitting assemblies , if you look at one of the manufacturers specification https://james walker.biz/products /88 it states not to be used on natural rubber ;butyl;or ethylene propylene compounds . I know various manufacturers will use different petroleum type carriers in their grease ,but this is not the correct solution when correct alternatives are readily available Dave
  24. Hi this is a very common problem as discussed ,I have recently greased mine ,which I do regularly with ' Locktite ' super lube synthetic grease ,I have been using this for years on many different calipers and it gives excellent results .I would not advise using copper grease as this attacks the rubber bellows .I wonder if part of the problem is caused by careless replacement of the rubber bellows in the machined grooves in the castings .You have to be very careful that the rubbers are fitted properly using a torch to see all the way around ,if there is one small area where the bellows is not in a groove water will soon enter ,and by capillary action wash out your grease to allow seizure in a very short time .
  25. Hi,with regard to running the same size all round ,when I purchased my IS 250 SE-L convertible ,it was fitted with lexus 18 in GS wheels which are 8J all round instead of 8J front and 81/2 J rear ,which means I have 245 x40 x 18 tyres on all 4 wheels .These were fitted by the Lexus dealer and are noted on their annual service sheet together with the tread depth . they were not concerned when I asked them and said some customers fit 225 x 40 all round .Car seems O K to me but I have not known it any different they have been on for nearly 5 years ,and are soon due a replacement when I will have to make a decision on sizes DAVE
