  1. I’m also fighting rust in this location. At this age I can’t grumble too much. I found a half inch of crud ( dry to the touch) inside the wheel liner on the inside of the arch lip. Using an inhibitor at mo to stabilise. Waiting for better weather to tackle…. I’ll diy it for this location.
  2. Looks like you’re going to need a new rear section. You may be able to bandage it temporarily to improve the sound if you’re not planning on replacing in the near future (& mot is not looming).
  3. I once had a random conversation with an old boy who’d worked at Jag all his career and he told me that the back boxes on the the V8s and V12s were always drilled at the lowest point with a X’mm hole from factory to drain the condensation. Significantly increasing their life ( his words). It did make me think as when I lost my back box…. I was really surprised…I must have poured a litre of liquid out of it even though I’d been driving for 15 mins at least…. Before chucking it in the boot. Its been discussed lots of times that even when running hot how much condensation the exhaust seems to (smoke/steam) in the right cold weather conditions. I levelled back at him that would be a bit of an MOT issue nowadays…… He said…Rubber grommets would sort that. Just made me wonder…..???
  4. In addition…. if you’re diy-ing or local garage, I also sourced new spring bolts, doughnut gaskets and rear box hangers. ( didn’t actually use the new hangers in the end as the original ones were/are still going strong) hope helps
  5. Hi Andy, Google…. Lexus IS 250 Exhaust should give you plenty of options. My journey below…. Front section…. https://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/car-parts/Lexus/IS250/2.5L/Petrol/Premium/Exhausts/Catalytic-Converters/LEX5005H/1/34?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD9ghT5R5Th_Qf-P-Qtl9WfnSWRz3&gclid=Cj0KCQiAzoeuBhDqARIsAMdH14EPA5iCzfUZgNIUCJmP_NHRNobRVTfPpqbPKhho6OL2hh2jb3M-MxIaAqPbEALw_wcB Rear section…….E-bay similar to this, fitting was very difficult to align properly. https://www.cats2u.co.uk/lexus/37133-lexus-is250-25-rear-exhaust-box-silencer-08-05-03-13-ety784.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAzoeuBhDqARIsAMdH14Fg2Xw-l6dn2JqO_Ollp3ClMXfwH_APb9wJlo2oHofR6SXnWdQaBr8aAh4lEALw_wcB Custom made stainless section…..don’t be put off by the cherry bomb address. Jason and the team can fab anything you need. https://www.cherrybomb.co.uk ….and when you’ve mulled over all this stuff, you’ll start the debate of cost & sound etc of going full stainless. 😁 KEEP Your original tips they just knock off….. they’ll clean up and keep you OEM look if that’s what you want. Last time I looked they were £80/£90 each OEM to replace 🙄.
  6. I swapped out my standard halogen for Osrams and it did make a significant difference. After one failed I then swapped them out for a Japanese brand with a higher lumen than the OSRAM…. and they were hopeless. My other half refused to drive it on rainy nights. So I then decided to try an LED swap out… going for the Auxiracer off Amazon. Wasn’t that scientific of a choice…. They were cheap at £20 something pounds, plug in and play…no wiring or modifications and I wanted to get a feel ( literally) for any heat issues. They have proved to be absolutely fine with a much improved beam distance etc. Passed my MOT last week ( no advisories 👍) nothing mentioned.
  7. Mines an 05 and started replacing sections two years ago….. so I guess the same time scale. Lost a back box first & then the dreaded y section went next. Finally replacing cats etc. I had a custom stainless steel section made for the y to support it better…. Apart from that just went with mild steel replacement sections. OEM is galvanised from factory rather than mild steel….. but I still think they have pretty remarkable longevity.
  8. Thought I would share my catch can update. Fitted one a couple of weeks ago. Pictures below. For reference: pic of oil in switch in intake. catch can and fittings location in engine bay and a pieces of new hose Ill give it a couple of thousand miles then have a look.
  9. I still can’t believe it was even running… Anyway… I did replace the PCV at the the last spark plug change and I removed it & just manually tested the resistance of the valve when intake was off…. It seemed ok ( id kept the old one for some reason so could compare) I will have a look at how to install a catch can as I’m intrigued how much oil is involved. 👍
  10. Guys….. I can’t believe it. Shes back…. 10A EFI 2 fuse blown. Replaced and seems to be back to normal. Looks like I was chasing the wrong end of the problem 🤦 Didn’t show on diagnostics, I wouldn’t have guessed it would have even started ?? Anyway… I’ll disconnect the battery and see if the lights disappear. 🤞
  11. Looking for help folks as wondering if solving this is economically viable to fix. Self inflicted issue so a bit mad at myself; got into the wrong lane at a busy roundabout I use all the time. Quick glance around, nothing special next to me so gave it “ the beans” in 1st & 2nd and beat the traffic over 80 yards + changing to correct lane. VSC /EML / TRC comes on and I immediately feel power loss ( no stall) and throttle response goes numb. I’m now on smart motorway at this point so keep going to next junction. Come off and do a quick roadside paper clip hack on OBD and car shows fault 051. Make it home ( only a handful of miles) Had the car scanned and showing vacuum solenoid and lamda issue. Smoke tested for vac leaks…. No problems. MAF seems ok, throttle body ok. Plenum comes off and it’s vey oily. Unclipping the sensor at the top right (PNP?? I think it’s something to do with idle) and there’s oil in the connector. I bought a new vac solenoid, a salvage plenum + new OEM seals. All went on lovely. Starts second time, running very rich but calms down as I guess the ecu’ s / lamdas start to do their thing. Can’t clear the code, still showing lamda issue. Test drive, acceleration still numb but mpg on readout starts to climb back towards normal. Order new ( denso ) lamda sensor bank 1 pre cat. Ready to solve that. Out of interest….. I disconnected the PNP again on ( new to me) plenum…… OIL? 😞 Strip it down again and I’m in same situation. So….. Have I missed a step to resolve? Have I done something more fundamental to the engine? ( valve seals/ rings) All thoughts gratefully received. Is250 MTM 144k Bought at 42k owned for 10 years + No previous engine problems Serviced to within an inch of its life Does not burn any oil or coolant between services
  12. Same plate as mine… I don’t think one horse going missing a year is too bad. I guess you didn’t have a reading as stock, so hard to compare. You may of made a difference with what you’ve done 🤷‍♂️ im sure you weren’t expecting that much without being able to increase intake, tune, headers & straight pipe.
  13. Hats off to you Normski2. Great guide….. Great result. Ive always wondered about the seat perforation bit when restoring. I think your 20 years experience might just have given you an edge! 👍 Im sure it will feel like a new motor again. ps. Glad it didn’t involve the circular saw. 😁
  14. Same story for mine…. Literally a week before the first lock down on a short local trip lost the offside rear box sheared at the pipe. It was in near perfect condition with only a line of surface rust on the box seam. Yes they are a real lump, several kgs in weight. Took it to my indie and he gave it a quick clean on the weld looked at a couple of internal sleeves but decided that it wouldn’t hold…. He also mentioned the weight. So at nearly 16 years old and 130k miles can’t complain…I figured time to replace. Due to lock down looming and not knowing how that was going to pan out I made the decision to go for a mild steel rear section and with an eBay voucher it cost £148. I ordered new spring bolts ( Toyota £14 lol) and hangers (generic). Labour £35…. Original bolts came off like butter with a quick spray apparently much to his surprise. The alignment was pretty poor to be fair with the tail pipes being slightly out. Noise/ note levels pretty similar to OEM. The alignment finally niggled at me so looked how to get it sorted. I decided to get a custom SS piece made for the Y section ( a known week point) which I already had a small well done on the flange of the mid section. It allowed a full alignment also. Mid section then started blowing at the flanges onto the headers around another 12 months later ( the next weakest point I guess after fixing the back) I left it to within a month of its MOT. I replaced that with Online Automotive part including new cats. £100 labour which was a bit of shame as they literally had to cut the sensors out the old exhaust. I cashed in the old cats on my EMR scrap account for £95 so that covered it off. Noise and tone a little throaty compared to OEM but not too obtrusive in the cabin. I guess like everything age of your IS, budget, desired noise, total investment etc …. You pays your money and takes your choice. Hope helps someone in their decision making. * prices correct at time of repair 😁
  15. Good to hear you’re unscathed. Every days a school day. I like the UX as well, although the ES in green has been calling me recently for some reason. 👀
  16. It’s not one of your lambda exhaust sensors is it ? or someone else’s you’ve managed to pick up along the way?
  17. Nicely done…. paint correction is an art & I love a good hydrophobicity geek out. Im rather alarmed at how quickly my range of (diy) detailing products have grown in the past couple of years. Might have to go back to golf…
  18. Another good point….. ££££ fine and points for using a mobile …… due to the propensity to endanger life. £100 fine for failing to secure flesh and blood in appropriate child car seat. wrong in my opinion.
  19. Indeed there is…. live streaming through cloud etc. We have an RS6 in the family and I believe it’s a blackvue in there. I was a bit on the fence myself with dash cams. Then I was given one for Christmas and fitted it myself. I’ve since then relied on it twice. Once in a crash for cash situation and the second where the other driver made a poor decision about getting past some parked cars, and expecting me to mount a pavement at 30 miles an hour with pedestrians on it, just so he could get past! Surprise surprise, he turned out to be a particularly obnoxious character, so I may have failed to point out to him that I had dash cam at the scene and awaited his version of events through his insurance company. Lo and behold it was all my fault for driving erratically and cutting him off! I then remembered 😉 that I hadn’t uploaded my dash cam to my insurer and went on to prove what an absolute bull****** he was. So I’m an advocate now.
