  1. My first thought would be to get a second opinion, just to confirm the diagnosis. Not sure in my mind how the CVT could fail and cause vibration? Damper plate, yes but ...

My RC300h was great to cruise along in but put the transmission into Sport mode and play with the paddle shifters and the car did a very good impression of a sports car, with realistic gear changes, very PlayStation like, much quicker than any other autobox with manual option. The RX450h is no sports car in any guise but with plenty of power from the 3.5ltr V6 it wafts along very smoothly, I don't feel the need to be 'sporty' It simply covers distance very quickly and effortlessly.
  3. When one puts one's foot down in a 'traditional' automatic the engine revs will soar as the box drops one or two gears to get the engine into the power range. The same happens with the e-CVT until the speed/load decreases and the revs drop again. In normal driving my RX450h rarely revs above 1500rpm. Even on short, hard overtakes the engine never sounds raucous but has a rather satisfying growl.
  4. What whiny CVT noise? I heard absolutely nothing in my RC300h and equally nothing in my RX450h. CVT is the best I've experienced, no swapping cogs no brake bands, no clutch. Constantly meshed gears spinning in oil, got to be the simplest most reliable transmission out there. Oh, and not a sound!!
  5. Sounds to me like you bought a car that has had a crash or delivery repair with replacement bumpers and in the process they forgot to put the sound deadening back in.
  6. Don't the recent LC models suffer from fuel flap failures, with Lexus issuing a recall?
  7. Usually an email to Lexus CS will sort the plate availability. They will contact your local dealership and get things moving. They say they are prioritising cars in the Greater London area but my dealer sorted my car within 7days of me asking.

  10. How many miles on the engine before failure? As you are rebuilding the engine everything will be as new so shouldn't be an issue for xxxx miles
  11. e-CVT is basically the electronic constantly variable transmission fitted to all Lexus hybrids. e-Four is the electric version of all wheel drive whereby a third electric motor mounted on the rear axle/differential that aids traction in slippery situations. It is not permanently operating, only when the car believes it is necessary. AFAIK all RX hybrids are both e-CVT and e-Four, someone will confirm or deny I'm sure.
  12. Put the car into the Ready state and the transmission in Park and let the hybrid system do it's job for at least 30min. The 12v battery is recharged by the traction battery and the petrol engine will start and stop as required to keep the traction battery charged but the system cannot recharge the hybrid battery if the car is in Neutral. Never leave the car in Neutral.

  14. Would this not be on the data label on the driver's door shut? Gross Train Weight - Unladen Weight? Also listed in the owner's handbook in the Specification section.
  15. The interior and exterior illumination on approach to the car can be set independently. I think this is a customisation possible only by the dealer, according to the handbook.
  16. Every Lexus I've had came with a small metal numbered tag, even when they came with two fobs and a key card. There was a note in the pouch (and in the handbook) with the keys saying to keep the tag (key number plate) in a safe place, not in the car. New mechanical keys can be cut with the information on the tag.
  17. Brake fade was a big problem when drum brakes were the norm. As the drums heated up they expand away from the shoes increasing pedal travel. Now with discs the norm heat isn't such an issue and in really heavy use the discs expand toward the pads. Friction material has, as you say, improved massively if at the expense of much more dust and wear.
  18. My Mercedes had these little levers in each headlamp but this simply dropped a little internal shield to mask the beam. One would still need to replace the units for permanent export.
