Gearbox Whine In 2nd And 3rd

Hi I have just bought a is200 and noticed that 2nd gear is very whiny

.

The car has done 100000 miles and have been offered a gearbox manual that has done 57000 miles will this get rid of the whining sound???

Please help as have got to buy within next few days.

No, Sean it wont. My first dabble with Lexus was a is200 sport with only 35k and the gearbox made the same noise. I thought that there was something wrong with the box so bought a second hand one for £100 and had it fitted which also cost a few hundred, same bloody noise!

I later found out that all these boxes make that whine noise, it's something to do with the way the teeth are cut on the gear cogs although I have no idea why Lexus have done this. Sold the car a few years ago but still have the original gearbox in my garage which as I say, has done about 35k. You are most welcome to it my friend, but it's gonna make the same noise!!

Years ago I remember Mini Coopers could be fitted with a gearbox with straight cut gears and these were noisy in comparison to a standard box, perhap Lexus do the same.

Wouldn't hurt to replace the gearbox oil I guess.

I guess there are variations between gearboxes. My wife's old IS200 wasn't bad, it did have a bit of a notchy change though - another characteristic of that gearbox.

I've just recently bought a 52 plate IS200 SE and the gear box also has a slight whine. It reminds me of a supercharger (Albeit a very tiny one). Nothing to worry about unless it becomes VERY loud then you may want to think about getting a new one.
