Recommened Tyre Size For 18"x8 Wheel

Looking a bit of advise on the Ideal size tyre for 18" wheel on a MK2 Gs300. (18"x8jj)

Currently i have 225/40R18

The issue i have with my current setup is that if i scrape a kerb, or if i rub against a kerb that i scrape my alloys and on occasions pinch the tyres which takes a small chunk of them.

If i were to change to 245/40R18 would i avoid scraping my alloys or would this present any other other problem (ie puncturing the tyre ect)?

i'd be grateful for any insight anyone could lend.
