Cracking noise in steering wheel

Recommended Posts

Hi Chaps,

Very odd experience with ISF, I'm getting cracking noise from steering wheel after going over the speed bumps or small wholes on the road. I went to Lexus Edgware, they had it for a few days and diagnosed it as an issue with steering column. Replaced it under the warranty (messed up radio buttons and gear paddle shifts...), but the cracking noise was still there. Went back and left it for another few days, they took it apart and reconnected buttons and also "cleaned and re-secure loose and dirty wiring and terminals". Then Lexus technician took it for a "20 miles" test run and it was happy with the results as apparently cracking was gone after cleaning it... I picked up the car again and as soon as I drove it, I went over the first speed bump and cracking was not solved... Loosing my mind as the car was with them 4 times and every time they break some other stuff.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Couple of thoughts on this:

- you need to tighten the screw on Edgeware as this is your worktime this is taking-up

- Take the service manager for a drive so he can hear the noise and say you want this sorted once and for all

- Consider the possibility that Edgeware may not be the best dealer for ISF issues; Woodford and Twickenham generally get good owner feedback on here

Hope that helps and you get it sorted

I had a similar issue a few years back with Audi, 3/4 visits and they couldn't identify the problem. In the end I took it to an experienced independent mechanic and he identified the issue in less than 5 minutes. Just a thought if Lexus can't sort it out. I don't have much faith in main dealer mechanics, would take my ISF to my local mechanic/friend but I appreciate (for resale) the Lexus stamp is important.

It would be helpful if you shared the diagnosis.

My issue was not related to your problems, my suggestion was to try a good independent mechanic, if Lexus fail to resolve the issue.

Ah, I obviously got the wrong end of the stick.

"Similar issue" threw me.

Thanks Guys,

I spoke to Lexus Edgware and they couldn't believe that cracking is still there, so they want one of their technicians do the test drive with me. Scheduled that for the beginning of the next week, so fingers crossed. If they cannot solve it this time then I will consider a local garage.

Stay clear of Woodford. They have no clue tbh. I would go lexus Sidcup.

I would double on that - you want to go anywhere, but not Woodford.

Try "Westfield Motors" in Rawreth near Rayleigh Essex, they are Lexus/Toyota specialist, they are excellent and 100% trustworthy and knowledgeable, they look after 3 ISF to my knowledge, good luck
