Lexus220d turbo trouble

Got a bit of a problem with my is220d 08 plate.

As we all know the turbo spools up at around 1800 rpm.

My problem is when I use full throttle there is no response from the turbo until I hit 2500 rpm then get a really strong boost and she fly.

Strange thing is when I drive at light throttle down to mid throttle you can feel the turbo boosting at 1800 rpm like it's supposed to.

My egr valve is clean as I did it myself last month. I'm beginning to suspect the maf sensor could be to blame.

Anybody got any thoughts on what my problem could be please.

I'm hoping it's not the turbo itself causing the problem .

Hey,

Strangely, we have had a couple of these queries here recently.

Well, since you have already cleaned out the EGR, you have eliminated the prime suspect.

Only on full throttle does suggest a blockage/lack of boost issue.

One possibility is the DPF.  I was having stuttering and minor performance problems, but after a forced regen, the car seems to be behaving itself now.

The MAF would have to be only slightly out of spec, otherwise the check VSC warning would be on and the car would go into limp home mode.

No smoke out the back?

Of course, the simplest solution to eliminate the turbo is to fit a boost gauge and see how and went it boosts.

Hi shapor

No smoke out the rear end and no warning lights. tick over is stable.

Full throttle and turbo suddenly kicks in at 2500 rpm and the car really moves. turbo used to kick in at full throttle at 1800 rpm.

As I mentioned at part throttle down to half throttle you can still feel turbo boosting at 1800 rpm.

Could it be the throttle position sensor by any chance?

It could be, but then again, you can't be sure without changing it.

You could get yourself an ODB2 reader, but the information it can provide is minimal.  If the ECU hasn't got any fault codes stored, it won't tell you what's wrong.

At this point what I would recommend is a trip to a dealer for a diagnostic check.  They will hook it up to their computer and see what's going on.

They can read turbo boost pressure, throttle position, EGR opening, DPF blockage amount, etc..

I think this would be better than trying to randomly change parts.

I agree with Sharpor regarding professional diagnosis although it doesn't have to Lexus who perform it, perhaps you have a nearby specialist?

Boost pressure sensors can fail, intercooler pipework can split, variable vane type turbocharger actuators can stick as well as other causes linked to fueling and exhaust gases.

Just to let you guys know my problem is solved.

Took my car into lexus Wolverhampton today. The problem was indeed the egr valve. Even though I had cleaned it myself and all looked fine I was wrong.

Anyway lexus fitted me a new egr valve and the car is back to normal. It's hit me in the pocket but my car is back to normal and I'm a happy bunny.

Well, I suppose if the valve itself had failed, cleaning it won't have done much good.

It did sound like a classic EGR problem.

You say you are a happy bunny, but aren't you trading it at the weekend for a 250?

Shahpor I certainly am trading in my is220d for an is250. cant wait to get rid of it.

I'm a happy bunny as I've been having sleepless nights over what's been causing my delayed turbo response .

The car actually feels very responsive now with the new egr lexus fitted me Saturday and I'm actually seeing over 40mpg now. before that I was averaging 30mpg at best.

Even so I've had my belly full of the diesel and I'm definitely trading it in for a 250.
