Lane Keeping Assist

Recommended Posts

Hi, just wondered how many people use the lane keeping assist function on the premier model? Is it worth paying the extra for the specification ?

Thank you

I have it on my F-Sport and have switched it on a couple of times, just to experience the function (came standard on the model).

It might be useful in extreme fog but without any steering assist (as offered by the likes of Audi, where the car will auto-steer to maintain position between the lines) I really can't see it's worth paying for.

The RC currently has Lane Departure Alert (LDA) only. The LDA will only inform you that you are about to cross your lane without indicating.

On the other hand, the Lane Keep Assist (LKA) will make steering inputs to keep you in the lane.

Having said that, which RX generation are you looking at? The 4RX has Lane Keep Assist standard in every trim level as part of the Safety System + so its not something you have to pay extra for.

Yes, I have LKA on my 4th Gen RX and I have never switched it on after the initial try out after purchase. I found it intensely annoying as I drive principally on rural A/B roads and country lanes and not motorways. I also tend to drive towards the crown of the road for best visibility (if nobody is coming the other way!) and it vibrates the steering all the time because of the middle line.

A lot of these "driver aids" are not very useful but a really useful feature like parked car heating (to de-ice the car in the morning) is not provided as an option. Oh well.

I drove a NX Premier for a few days which had LKA. It does correct your steering, beep and make the wheel vibrate if you stray over the line without indicating.

I thought it was a great feature... for the first hour. I then started to find it midly annoying. After a couple of hours I switched it off as an unnecessary gimmick.

As Rayaan mentions, it comes as standard on the new RX. If you are thinking of a different car, it is worth noting that it is only one of a bundle of extras that come with the Premier package. You may find that the LKA is not worth having, but the other features included in the upgrade may be. For the NX premier - as an example - these include upgraded audio and satnav, radar cruise control, head up display, memory and ventilated seats for both driver and passenger, LED headlights (how and high beam) with auto beam, etc

We have the Toyota Safety Sense system on my wife's Yaris Hybrid, and I use the LDA function all the time on motorways. It's pointless anywhere else though, it does need good white lines to see though and the state of our motorways this is not always the case.

  • 1 month later...

I use it most of the time on motorways. It does not keep in the centre of the lane, it tends to wonder between the white lines. Where it works really well is in slow moving traffic jams below 30 MPH. I have driven for almost two hours with no hands on the steering wheel or manual use of brakes\accelerator on a stretch of autobahn between Hanover and Hamburg. The only input needed was a touch on the accelerator or CC stalk to set off from a halt

Below 30 MPH there is no nag screen or beep when hands free.

As Malcolm mentioned earlier, it's dependent on driving style. It's not fully autonomous so be very careful!!!. I've used it once and it's not to my liking. It's very hit and miss, much like the speed detection. On one 40mph limited road the screen said 140 was the limit!

On a gangzoom note, I  had a Tesla Model X for 2 days last month. Autopilot on that worked flawlessly on the M62 from my house to Manchester airport T2. It is a great techno car but, I am going to wait 3 years to see what the others offer.

For the moment the RX is just peachy.
