Thud from Accelerator - Lexus IS 220d

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Firstly, just want to say this is my first Lexus and I know many of you are not a fan of the IS 220d, I am loving it. It did take some getting used to, especially the gearing (although I did pay the extra to get the sport), still a clunky.

I have owned the car now for about 7 months and it has 86k on the clock, its a 57 plate. Full Lexus service history, but I did get the dreaded DPF fault after a month. This was repaired by a highly recommend Lexus specialist in Droxford, Hampshire.

I do commute 90 miles a day, fingers crossed I don't get that fault again!!

Anyway, recently I have noticed that when I release my foot of the accelerator it makes a weird thud. If I turn the radio off it is very noticeable. Has anyone else suffered from the same problem or know what it could be?

It does appear to be more noticeable at speed; however, it does make the noise every time you lift your foot quickly off the accelerator pedal.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Have wheels been off recently may be loose wheel bolts. Could be suspension related spring not seated right or snapped.

Could also be an engine mount, i would check the rear one. Diesel engines weigh more than petrol counterparts, as a rule of thumb.

Welcome!

I read your post as the actual pedal making a thump?

I don't know if there's some sort of soft stop that's missing. The pedal is only held on by two bolts and an electrical connector - no complicated cables or anything. Might be worth taking it off and see if that gets you further. Could it even be that the securing bolts are loose?

Many thanks for the advice.

It doesn't sound like the actual pedal, or an interior noise.

The "thud" is coming from the engine or under the car.... I think anyway.

Will definitely get the engine mounts checked. Is there an easy way to check if they have had it?

Welcome Aaron.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know if the mounts have failed without swapping them out.

I had mine done because I was getting a bad juddering when pulling away.  Even after taking them out, the technician told me they looked fine.  However, it did solve the problem, so they probably failed internally.

To make matters worse, the sub frame has to be dropped down to remove them.

I don't suppose you could get a video of the car making the noise?  It is notoriously difficult to diagnose noises without hearing them.

By the way, do you mind telling me who the specialist in Droxford is?  It is about 40 minutes away from me.  Thanks.

Hi Shahpor,

Thanks for the welcome and reply.

Sounds like a bit of a mission then, will have to get it looked at when I have some spare money. Just had to change both the rear calipers and discs!!

No problem, the company is called Lex-Tech, the garage is hidden away. Post code is SO32 3PD, number 01489 877125. Speak to Stuart, he is the owner, a very helpful and genuine guy.

I will try and record a video and post it up.

Thanks for the info.  Always nice to hear about good indy garages.

I had a rear caliper replaced at my last service too, luckily under warranty for me.  Shame considering how reliable the rest of the car is.
